Companies are actively seeking for ways to enhance their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effectiveness. One of the alternatives in CSR strategy is to have customers participate in it, such as Run for Leukemia hosted by Nike. This research examines whether customer-participatory CSR (CP CSR) is effective, and whether the effectiveness will vary by the participation type. Inspired by the case of Amour, an infant formula brand, we observe and analyze an existing pattern in their CP CSR campaign through Pilot Study 1 and 2 - those who participate in Relay-for-Baby (RB) campaign via breast-feeding are more likely to recommend Amour than those via formula-feeding are, with multiple poten-tial mechanisms. We examine the theoretical background and ultimately attempt to empirically ana-lyze the pattern.
Because past research in CP CSR has been largely unexplored, we borrow the concepts from at-tribution, value, and goal, to observe the underlying mechanisms of our finding. Respectively, our em-pirical analysis is designed with three conceptual models each in perspective of inferred sincerity, intrin-sic value, and goal congruence. With preliminary support from our qualitative study, all three models are expected to predict and explain the customer’s behavior.
In the attribution model, we find that customers who participate in RB campaign through breast-feeding perceive the campaign as lower on benefit salience, which leads into higher inferred sincerity of the brand, and hence higher loyalty. In the intrinsic value model, we find that customers who partici-pate in the campaign through breast-feeding perceive the campaign as higher on subjective task value, which leads into customer’s higher intrinsic value, and thus higher loyalty. In the goal congruence mod-el, we expect that customers who participate in the campaign through breast-feeding perceive the cam-paign as higher on support for goal-striving, which leads into higher goal congruence between the cus-tomer and the brand, and hence higher loyalty. All models are successfully operationalized except for the support for goal-striving, though the mediating effect of goal congruence still exists. Consequently, we suggest that the first two models do predict, while all three models play a role in explaining the prior observation. Overall, this paper provides strategic implications for the increasing number of companies seeking for ways to improve their effectiveness of CP CSR and ultimately make sustainable in long-term.
