Resonance scattering of plane acoustic wave from an air-filled cylindrical shell was analyzed as a function of the frequency times shell-thickness parameter, fd and the ratio of inner radius to outer radius of the shell, b/a. The resonances were obtained by subtracting the rigid cylinder amplitude from the backscattered amplitude of Rayleigh normal modes, then identified as the circumferential waves corresponding to Stoneley surface wave and Lamb plate waves, according to their cutoff frequencies and velocity dispersion curves. The velocity dispersion of the Stoneley-type circumferential waves was independent of b/a, while the elastic circumferential waves underwent a smooth transition to the lowest symmetric Lamb plate wave, the corresponding circumferential wave had a cutoff frequency. Each circumferential wave had its own characteristic fd region of very small attenuation varying with b/a. The amplitude of circumferential waves could be determined by single characteristic curve depending on b/a, regardless of their type.
