For recent industrial rotating machinery, high stiffness and precision spindle system for high speed and precision mechanical machining is required. But most rotating machinery is supported either by fluid or rolling bearings and therefore speeds and machining accuracy are limited because of bearing problems such as wear, lubrication difficulties and large vibration. For the purpose of improvement of described problems, the use of magnetic bearing has been studied.
In this paper, the main object is an acquisition of design experience with execution of elementary experiment for construction of five-axis controlled magnetic bearing systems. For the object, design of PID control circuit for two-axis magnetic bearing is executed. And stiffness characteristics and load capacity and slew rate are examined both theoretically and experimentally.
