A computer program is developed for the analysis of elastic contact problems in the large deformation regime based on the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation. Unbonded, frictionless contact is assumed and material nonlinearities are not considered.
Total displacement is described as the sum of the Eulerian displacement which accounts for the changes in finite element meshes and the Lagrangian displacement which accounts for the deformations. By applying the mixed method, contacting nodes can be made to occupy the same position after deformation. Contact problems are described as partial differential equations of incremental displacements and transformed to equivalent minimization problems which are solved efficently by the Lemke's algorithm.
Several examples are solved and the results are compared with those in literature. Contacting pairs are at the same position regardless of initial meshes and the results are in good agreement with those in literature. But some mesh distortion is observed and further researches will be desirable to control the positions of inner nodes by appropriately assigning the Eulerian displacement.
