Bolted joint in composite laminated shells complicates failure features for nonlinealy anisotropic material character and stress concentration near the hole boundary. Moreover, the analyses of thick shells have a number of different features from those of thin shells. In this study for doubly curved shells, shell theory is utilized with the first-order shear deformation and thickness-to-radius ratio is taken into account in the formulation. In the failure analysis, Yamada-Sun criterion and cosine distribution characteristic curve near the hole boundary are used. The present results agree well with experimental results of failure modes and failure strengths of composite laminated plates containing pin loaded holes. Failure modes and strengths for the shell are different from those for plates."
