There have been many attempts to separate the electronic effects of the substituents into the field(inductive) effects and resonance effects. To mention they are : Swain's (F,R), Taft's ($σ_I$, $σ_R$) and Charton's ($σ_L$, $σ_D$). These field constants and resonance constants have a fairly good orthogonality each other. We carried out; i) factor analysis with orthogonality condition for ($σ_m$, $σ_p$, F, R) data set and confirmed the self consistency in this method. ii) two independent methods for predicting the field effect and resonance effect. First method is the one which predict the field constants fromthe result of MO calculations and the second method is the one which can obtain the resonance constants, from the orthogonality condition. It is found that the second method is consistent with the factor analysis with orthogonality condition.
Hammett의 치환체의 전자 효과에 대한 논문이 발표된 이래로, 유기 반응 또는 생화학 반응에서의 치환체 전자 효과에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되었다. 치환체 전자 효과는 Inductive(field)effects와 Resonance effects로 구성되어진다는 것이 일반적인 견해이다. 이것을 기초로하여 Taft, Swain, Charton 그리고 Hansch 등은 각각 독자적으로 Inductive effects와 Resonance effects를 분리하였다. 이들의 Inductive effects와 Resonance effects는 완전히 orthogonal 하지는 않지만, 상당히 좋은 Orthogonality를 유지하고있다. Orthogonality에 대한 근거를 제시하기 위하여, 임의의 두개의 충분히 큰 data set에 대하여 Orthogonal factor analysis를 하였다. 그 결과 이 방법은 Self consistent함을 보여주고 있다. 우리는 Inductive effect와 Resonance effects를 얻는 두 가지 독립적인 방법을 제안했다. 첫째는, Inductive constants를 4-X-bicyclo[2, 2, 2] octane-1-carboxylic acids의 acid moiety에서의 전자 밀도를 계산함으로써 얻는 방법이고, 둘째는, 주어진 Inductive constants에 대하여, 통계적인 의미의 orthogonal한 Resonance constants를 구하는 것이다. 이런 방법으로 얻어진 Inductive constants와 Resonance constants는 Orthogonal factor analysis에 의하여 얻어진 두 개의 Factor scores와 좋은 상관 관계를 유지하고 있다.
