As the modern rotating machines have a tendency of being operated at higher speed and designed to be lighter, the knowledge of the dynamic behavior becomes more and more important because of increasing requirement in accuracy and reliability. Modal testing of such rotating machines has provided a major contribution to our efforts to understand and to control many vibration phenomena encountered in practice. However, the rotation inherent in such systems is known to create a number of theoretical and practical barriers against the application of classical modal testing methods in their usual form. The primary objective of this work is to develop a genuine modal parameter identification scheme for rotating machinery and the various excitation / curve fitting techniques.
A few attempts have been made to develop modal testing methods for rotating machinery with consideration of the system's non-self-adjointness. However they completely ignore the directivity of backward and forward modes and thus the heavy overlapping of those modes is inevitable in the frequency domain. Recently, a complex modal testing theory, based on the complex input/ output relations, has been developed for modal parameter identification of rotating machinery. In this work, the complex modal testing theory is re-formulated, in a rigorous way, for general anisotropic rotors as well as isotropic rotors. The complex modal testing features that it gives not only the directivity of backward and forward modes but also completely separates those modes in the frequency domain so that the effective modal parameter identification is possible. As the complex inputs and outputs are introduced, the conventional definitions of spectral quantities such as spectral density functions and coherence functions (COHs) are also extended to account for complex quantities.
The complex modal testing method is different from the classical modal testing method in measurements, excitaion techniques and, in particular, estimation method of frequency response functions(FRFs). Various excitation methods, unidirectional, bidirectional rotating and bidirectional stationary excitations, are therefore proposed for the effective use of the complex modal testing. The proposed excitation methods aim at the direct or indirect assessment of FRFs and COHs between complex inputs and outputs which is required in the process of complex modal testing. In order to evaluate the excitation methods, the estimation errors of FRFs are theoretically derived and numerically simulated. The theoretical and simulation results show that the bidirectional stationary excitation allows good estimates of FRFs between complex inputs and outputs in the presence of measurement noises and variations involved with realization of forces. The excitation methods are also applied to a rotor bearing system by using an electro-magnetic exciter developed in the laboratory to investigate the practicality of each method. Experimental results show that bidirectional stationary excitation allows the most accurate estimates of FRFs between complex inputs and outputs for anisotropic rotors as well as isotropic rotors, as expected from the theoretical and simulation results.
A curve fitting method for frequency functions with complex coefficients is proposed to extract the modal parameters from the two-sided FRFs between complex signals. The complex curve fitting is tested and applied to the laboratory rotor, showing that the method enables the accurate modal parameter identification for rotaing machinery.
Finally, modal parameter identification experiments are successfully carried out with the rotor by using the proposed excitation, in particular, bidirectional stationary excitation, and curve fitting techniques. Modal parameters for the first and second flexural modes of the rotor are accurately obtained including mode shapes, showing that the effect of anisotropy and gyroscopic moment on each flexural modes can be different in a rotor system. In conclusion, the modal parameter identification scheme developed is proved to be effective in modal testing of rotating machinery.
