Rising fuel cost and a focus on reduction in greenhouse gases have driven the need for increased efficiency of internal combustion engines. There has been a growing interest in compression ignition (CI) engines due to its higher efficiency compared to spark ignition (SI) engines. However, CI engines have drawbacks of high level of nitric oxides ($NO_X$) and soot emissions.
Many researchers have shown homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) and premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) concepts to be promising techniques for simultaneous $NO_X$ and soot reductions. These concepts use a well premixed fuel and air mixture that results in low combustion temperature and reduced rich regions which can achieve simultaneous $NO_X$ and soot reductions. However, they also have some problems such as the control of combustion phasing as well as high level of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon mo$NO_X$ide (CO) emissions. It is difficult to control the burning rate in HCCI and PCCI modes because they are controlled by chemical kinetics. For the combustion mode controlled mainly through the chemical kinetics, it is important to choose adequate fuels because the combustion process and burning rate were determined by fuel properties. When using high octane number fuel such as gasoline which has poor auto-ignition qualities for these modes, it becomes difficult to achieve combustion at low-load conditions. However, when high cetane number fuel such as diesel which has superior auto-ignition qualities is used, it has difficulty controlling the combustion phasing with increase in the engine load. The high level of unburned HC and CO emissions comes from the earlier injection timings.
In this study, the effects of hydrogen ($H_2$) ratio and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on combustion and emission characteristics of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode were investigated. Dual-fuel mode and exhaust gas recirculation were applied to improve the control of combustion phasing and $H_2$ was used to reduce HC and CO emissions at low load condition. In dual-fuel combustion modes, high octane number (or low reactivity) fuel is injected through intake port while high cetane number (or high reactivity) fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The fuel reactivity can be optimized by varying the ratios of two different fuels to optimally accommodate engine load changes. In-cylinder fuel blending generates fuel reactivity stratification, which is accompanied by the stratification of equivalence ratio. Because $H_2$ is a fuel with higher auto-ignition temperature, it is helpful to control the combustion phasing in a diesel engine.
A single-cylinder direct injection diesel engine which has displacement volume of 500 cc was used for this study. $H_2$ was supplied to the intake port with an injection pressure of 0.7 MPa using two regulators. Injection timing of $H_2$ was fixed to-240 crank angle degrees (℃A) after top dead center (aTDC) using a commercial compressed natural gas (CNG) injector. Diesel was injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system with an injection pressure of 60 MPa.
The injection timings of the $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI region were investigated by varying the injection timing from -60 ℃A aTDC to TDC. The injection timing between -32 ℃A aTDC and -28 ℃A aTDC was selected in terms of the simultaneous reduction of $NO_X$ and HC emissions.
The effects of $H_2$ ratio on combustion characteristics of the $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was investigated by varying $H_2$ energy ratio from 0% to 70% of total amount of energy supplied. Combustion phasing of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was retarded with increasing $H_2$ fraction at a constant EGR rate. This can be explained by the reduced diesel concentration and chemical effect of $H_2$. These effects of $H_2$ addition reduce the heat release rate during the low temperature reaction stage and thus retard the combustion phasing of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel combustion.
The effects of EGR rate on combustion and emission characteristics of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was investigated by varying EGR rate from 0% to 50%. Combustion phasing of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was retarded with increasing EGR rate at a constant $H_2$ rate. This can be explained by the dilution and thermal effects of EGR. $NO_X$ emissions of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was decreased with increasing EGR rate due to the lower combustion temperature. However, HC and CO emissions increased with increasing EGR rate due to the reduced oxygen concentration and lower combustion temperature.
Combustion phasing directly affects indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode. CA50, the crank angle at which 50% of total heat release is reached, was fixed at 2.4 ℃A aTDC to remove the effect of combustion phasing on IMEP of an engine. IMEP of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode was increased with $H_2$ enrichment. This is due to the reduced burn duration with $H_2$ enrichment. HC, CO, and smoke emissions of the $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode were rapidly decreased when $H_2$ energy ratio is increased. This is caused by three possible reasons. Firstly, since the percentage of diesel fuel input into cylinder is decreased with an increase in $H_2$ fraction. Secondly, $H_2$ enrichment enhances the high temperature reaction of diesel fuel combustion and thus intensifies the oxidation of incomplete combustion products. Thirdly, less EGR rate which reduces HC and CO emissions can be applied to the $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode with high $H_2$ energy ratio. $NO_X$ emissions of the $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode were increased with higher $H_2$ enrichment. This is due to improved the high temperature reaction of diesel fuel combustion with $H_2$ enrichment. However, this could be reduced to the similar level of pure diesel PCCI mode with more retarded CA50 of a $H_2$/diesel dual-fuel PCCI mode.
