Nowadays, a number of applications require various rechargeable batteries as an energy storage element and power source. To meet the voltage and power demands of applications, multiple cells should be connected in series and parallel. Parallel-connected batteries naturally have the same voltage and state of charge, but series-connected batteries do not. Cell imbalances among series-connected batteries can occur due to inevitable electrical and chemical properties such as manufacturing tolerances, differences in aging characteristics, and uneven ambient temperatures. When these unbalanced batteries are left in use without any control such as cell balancing, the energy storage capacity of batteries decreases severely. In the worst case, they may explode or catch fire. Therefore, cell balancing circuit should be strongly required to guarantee safety and to extend the life time of the batteries.
To achieve the cell balancing of a battery string, many techniques have been developed. Cell balancing circuits are classified into two types: passive cell balancing circuits and active cell balancing circuits. Passive cell balancing circuits can be easily implemented with low production costs and a small size using minimal resistors and switches. However, these schemes show a limited balancing current due to the heat problem from the power consumption of bleeding resistors. To overcome the drawbacks of passive cell balancing, active cell balancing techniques and circuits using charge-transfer among the cells have been studied and applied. Active cell balancing circuits can be classified into two methods: a pack-to-cell balancing method and a cell-to-cell balancing method. Cell-to-cell balancing method can be categorized into two methods: a direct cell-to-cell method and an adjacent cell-to-cell method. Through the immediate charge distribution and the direct charge-transfer, pack-to-cell and direct cell-to-cell balancing methods show outstanding balancing performance and speed. However, the above-mentioned balancing circuits should use transformers for galvanic isolation or many bidirectional switches with floating gate driving circuit and the voltage stress of device is also high, which leads to bulky size and high implementation cost. On the other hand, adjacent cell-to-cell balancing circuits can be competitive candidates for cost-effective circuits with a small size because of low voltage stress of active components and less number of switches. However, theirs cell balancing speed can be slow because of charge-shift with several steps from the overcharged cell to the undercharged cell. Moreover, some circuits also require many switches to improve cell balancing speed in adjacent cell-to-cell balancing structure.
In this dissertation, the research is mainly focused on cell balancing circuit with charge-transfer structure between adjacent cells for improved cell balancing speed and reduced switch counts. The research is divided into two parts as follows.
Part 1. A Chain Structure of Switched Capacitor for Improved Cell Balancing Speed
Switched capacitor is the promising method due to no bulky magnetic components, such as multiple winding transformer, thus it can be easily implemented and have small size. Moreover, closed-loop are not required, and balancing operation is automatically able to be achieved without cell voltage sensing circuitry. However, when switched capacitor method is applied in the lithium-ion battery, cell balancing speed is generally slow when the number of batteries is high. In particular, the cell balancing between the uppermost cell and the undermost cell is very slow.
In order to increase balancing speed, especially among outer cells, a new chain structure of the switched capacitor is proposed. For the improved cell balancing speed, two circuits with chain structure are proposed. The proposed structures have a direct or indirect path for charge-transfer between the uppermost cell and the undermost cell. In the proposed circuits, the uppermost cell can be adjacent to the undermost cell by using additional switches and capacitor, and it can achieve efficient and fast cell balancing among outer cells. In this part, theoretical analysis on cell balancing speed is also carried out. To verify cell balancing performance, cell balancing tests are carried out with a prototype circuit for 8 lithium-ion batteries. The experimental results shows improved cell balancing speed compared with conventional circuit. Moreover, the energy efficiency is also similar with that of conventional circuit despite faster cell balancing speed.
Part 2. Center-Cell Concentration Structure of a Cell-to-Cell Balancing Circuit with a Reduced Number of Switches
Switched capacitor can be implemented with a small size. However voltage-fed type using capacitor shows relatively slow cell balancing speed because the cell voltage difference to SOC is very small in the lithium-ion batteries. To increase the cell balancing speed, multi-stacked bi-directional buck-boost converters can be used. However, the double switches per cell for bidirectional charge-transfer increase the implementation cost. To reduce the number of switch, the unidirectional structure can be used. However, the cell balancing speed is relatively slow due to the unidirectional charge-shift with a single switch.
To achieve competitive balancing ability of cell-to-cell balancing circuit with fewer switches, a new cell-to-cell balancing circuit with a center-cell concentration structure is proposed. The proposed circuit collects the charges from an overcharged cell to the center-cell, and then the collected charges are redistributed to the upper and lower side batteries. In this part, the operational principles of the proposed circuit are analyzed, and a comparison of the component counts and balancing performance between the conventional and proposed circuits is shown. To verify the cell balancing performance, a prototype for 8 cells is implemented, and balancing tests of the conventional and proposed circuits are carried out. The experimental results demonstrate the competitive cell balancing ability of the proposed circuit although a single switch is used for each cell.
