Since the Sony Corporation has first commercialized lithium ion batteries, it has dominated the batteries market due to their light weight, high energy and power densities. These properties make the batteries ideal for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. $LiCoO_2$ was the first material used as a cathode and together with other transition metal oxides still dominates today market. The main concern of transition metal oxides are occurrence oxygen evolution during cycling at high temperature. Safety becomes an issue for transition met-al. Recently, $LiFePO_4$ is recognized as a promising cathode material due to its strong covalent bonding of P-O, which allows it to stable at high temperature without oxygen evolution. Other phosphate-based materials, such as $LiT_2(PO_4)_3$, $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$, $Na_3V_2(PO_4)_3$, and $Na_2FeP_2O_7$, have been studied as alternative cathode materials. However, phosphate-based materials have suffered low electronic conductivity and render poor electrochemical performance. Thus, various carbonaceous materials have been developed to overcome this challenge. In this work, the role of graphene as conducting material is studied after hybridized with aforementioned phosphate-based materials using various synthesis strategies to enhance electrochemical per-formance. Along with hybridization processing, the relationships between the physico-chemical properties and the electrochemical performance of the hybrid cathode materials are also scrutinized in this work.
In 3^{rd} chapter, the $LiTi_2(PO_4)_3$ (LTP) with NASICON structure was grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries and for high power applications, such as hybrid electric vehicles and electric grid systems. LTP has a low electronic conductivity and require effective material design and strategies. Therefore, a two steps approach was employed by first growing TiO_2 nanoparticles on graphene oxide to prevent graphene re-stacking in the formation of LTP at high temperature. The graphene composite could achieve high rate capability as a cathode material with a total graphene content as low as 1.79 wt%. The rGO-LTP hybrid exhibited specific power and good cycling stability due to its highly packed and interconnectedness with graphene. The rGO-LTP was further analyzed by various spectroscopies to determine the factors governing the electrochemical performance. Be-sides the morphologies and properties of rGO must be retained, covalent bonding between rGO and active materials are an important factor as well in facilitating fast electron transport.
In 4^{th} chapter, a higher operating voltage of $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ (LVP) with monoclinic structure was composited with rGO. Through utilizing the one pot synthesis approach, rGO wrapped LVP particles were designed using functionalized graphene oxide to anchor metal ions, followed by an annealing process to obtain rGO-LVP cathode material. The rGO wrapped LVP particles morphologies were observed by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the single phase LVP with monoclinic structure. The rGO-LVP cathode material exhibited high rate performance and cycling stability. This excellent performance is ascribed to capable of maintaining high electrical conductivity and its hierarchical structure, which provides a fast electron/ion transport pathway, large electrode-electrolyte contact area, and structure stability upon prolonged cycling. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the rGO-LVP cathode material maintained low resistance through-out 150 cycles at room temperature and at an elevated temperature. The degree of graphitization and defects of rGO sheets in the rGO-LVP composite has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Other characterization techniques were also utilized to understand the good performance of the rGO-LVP composite at an elevated temperature.
Sodium ion batteries are a good alternative to lithium ion batteries due to their highly availability, which lowers their cost. In 5^{th} chapter, a $Na_3V_2(PO_4)_3$ with NASICON structure was composited with rGO a using sol-gel method to enable the anchoring of particles to the surface of rGO. Their morphologies and phases observed using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The rGO-NVP delivered high rate performance, indicating its potential as a cathode material for sodium ion batteries. The electronic conductivity plays a role in enhancing the electrochemical performance. Features such as surface chemistry, morphology and porosity of the cathode material also contributed for high rate performance.
In 6^{th} chapter, $Na_2FeP_2O_7$ has a 3 V high rate cathode with high thermal stability was considered as a cathode material for sodium ion batteries. We have employed the precipitated precursors wrapped with graphene oxide and heat treated at 600℃ to prevent agglomeration during the heat treatment process due to the low melting point. The particle size of $Na_2FeP_2O_7$ was greatly suppressed as compared to the sample without additional of rGO, leading to high specific capacity, good cycling stability and high rate capability. The ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to investigate the sodium ion extraction mechanism and other possible reactions during cycling in the presence of rGO.
$LiTi_2(PO_4)_3, Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3, Na_3V_2(PO_4)_3, Na_2FeP_2O_7$ 등의 인산염계 소재들 또한 기존의 양극 소재를 대체할 수 있는 대안으로써 연구되어 왔다.
