Self-assembled colloidal aggregation routes to dielectric structure with face-centered cubic symmetry and submicrometer periodicity have been extensively studied in the past decade because of their potential applications including anisotropic building-block, photonic crystals and color pigments. Aggregates of colloidal particles can be classified into several categories including the aggregates of small number of colloidal particles, so-called colloidal cluster, spherical colloidal crystals, so-called photonic balls and amorphous colloidal aggregates, so-called photonic glass. Various approaches have been studied to achieve 3 dimensional structures composed of colloidal particles. In order to fabricate these colloidal suprastructures, confined geometry with mobile interface have been one of the best way. When colloidal particles are dispersed in confined emulsion droplets, the droplets can supply two dimensional (2D) space for colloids confinement as well as 3D space. Colloids which residue on the interface can reduce the surface energy and stabilize the droplets by replacing free interface of excess energy. When decrease of surface energy is much larger than the thermal energy (~kT), the colloids are anchored on the 2D spherical interface and do not escape from the interface to droplet or continuous phase under week external disturbance. Therefore, particle size and surface property determine the type of confining dimension. In the case of 2D confining geometry, colloidal particles are moved with mobile interface whereas, colloidal particles confined in 3D geometry can freely move in emulsion droplets during solvent evaporation. Accordingly, rheological and optical properties of colloidal aggregates can be modulated by varying number of colloidal particles inside droplet, surface moiety of colloidal particles or evaporation time of liquid.
Here, I describe various colloidal aggregates prepared by different confined geometry with applications. In chapter 2, I report heterogeneous colloidal clusters which have diverse configurations compared with minimal second moment structures. To achieve this, I used mixture of colloidal particles with two different surface wettabilities. Silica spheres of 1.2 μm in diameter were prepared and modified with dichlorodimethylsilane (DCDMS) and octadecyl-trimethoxysilane (OTMOS), respectively, for different surface wettability. Binary mixtures of the two different silica spheres were dispersed in toluene with 1:1 mixing ratio. Since two silica spheres have different contact angle on toluene droplet, they formed irregular colloidal clusters as toluene evaporated. Moreover, their irregular shapes were determined by the composition of silica spheres. Homogeneous colloidal clusters were prepared and compared with heterogeneous one. While trimer composed of three numbers of homogeneous spheres showed triangular shape, heterogeneous trimer showed ‘Y-shaped’ or ‘T-shaped’ configuration. In case of heterogeneous clusters with more than 3 silica spheres, unusual configurations were observed due to various combinations between two silica spheres. Their various combinations were confirmed by using confocal microscope.
Colloidal crystals have a great potential for many optical applications due to their unique photonic band gap properties. In particular, photonic balls which are spherical assemblies of colloidal particles provide ease of processing, high production throughput, and rotation-independent optical properties, which makes them useful for pigment-less color materials and UV-blocking materials in cosmetics. However, in-house procedure and low mechanical durability severely limit their practical applications. In chapter 3, I report rigid spherical photonic crystals, photonic balls composed of commercially available silica particles. Silica particles are consolidated into spherical shape face-centered cubic (fcc) structures, by using water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion template, which then experience thermal treatment. Photonic crystals made up of periodic modulation of refractive indices have many potential application due to their unique photonic bandgap properties. However, low mechanical durability and limitation of bandgap position between visible and IR range cause problems for practical application. During the heat treatment below 300°C, organic residua in matrix between individual particles of photonic balls are removed. Reflectance peak is blue-shifted and reflectivity is enhanced due to increase of refractive index contrast. Photonic balls treated above 500°C show more blue shifted reflectance peak and higher mechanical durability compared with as prepared photonic balls because individual silica particles are partially fused with their neighbors. Photonic balls can be produced with high yield through mechanical emulsification and size distribution of products can be reduced via sieving process. In addition, reflectance peak position can be tuned by varying the size of silica particles from UV to visible range. Therefore, the photonic balls can be used for not only color pigments but also novel UV screening materials.
There are various photonic structures made up of colloidal particles including photonic crystals which have long range ordered arrays as well as photonic glasses which have only short range order originated from amorphous arrays of colloidal particles. The iridescences of the colloidal crystals originate from Bragg reflection, which is the reflection mechanism that occurs as a result of the long-range order in the particle arrangement. Thus, if the arrangement is changed from the crystalline structure to the amorphous state, which has only a short-range order, iridescence is expected to be suppressed. Photonic glasses are microstructure of the isotropic aggregate with a short range order, and angle dependence is significantly reduced as a result of constructive interference due to their amorphous nature. Angle independent character is strong advantage as a color pigment so many researcher are interested in this materials. So, in chapter 4, I report fabrication of photonic glass beads. To achieve amorphous arrays of colloidal particles, faster evaporation of solvent than mobility of colloidal particles is needed. To provide 3D confined geometry and fast evaporation at the same time, Leidenfrost droplets which are floating droplets on metallic surface at much higher than boiling point of solvent due to vapor film between droplets and hot surface. After total evaporation of solvent, amorphous aggregates are fabricated which have structural color. In addition, reflectance contrast of photonic glass beads can be enhanced by introducing carbon black nanoparticles because they absorb undesired scattering.
