Lithium secondary batteries have become a commercial battery throughout the world. In spite of the successful commercialization, intensive efforts to increase energy densities and to improve safety have been done as the application of lithium secondary batteries expand. To increase the energy densities of lithium secondary batteries, from the capacity viewpoint, new material with high capacity such as silicon, tin, metal oxide, and newly introduced lithium metal oxide anode is preferable in replacement of graphite. Additionally, new type of lithium battery system like Li-S and $Li-O_2$ battery can be one way of improving the energy densities of lithium batteries. From the safety viewpoint, new material based on the olivine structure such as $LiFePO_4$ is considered as good candidate electrode material.
On the other hand, operation condition is another factor of determining performance of a battery. Proper controlling of operation condition can enhance the cell performance. Especially, controlling the interphase between electrode material and electrolyte is quite important factor to improve the performance of battery systems. From this point of view, we investigate and controlling the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) of given battery system. In this thesis, we examine the interfacial characteristics of new electrode material designed for the high capacity and safety.
Firstly, we handled with interfacial characteristics of new anode candidate material. Lithium vanadium oxide ($Li_1.1V_0.9O_2$, LVO), newly introduced as an alternative anode material. This material has 1.5 times larger volumetric energy density. However, relative low electrical conductivity, particle break-down during lithium ion insertion and decomposition of electrolyte induce poor cycle performance. To resolve such problems, we introduced fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to stabilize the SEI layer of $Li_1.1V_0.9O_2,$ and 3wt% of FEC showed enhanced cycle performance. From the surface analysis, it can be concluded that the reason of improved cycle performance would be related to the stable solid electrode/electrolyte interphase (SEI) and reduced particle breakdown. It seems that robust property of modified SEI layer makes enhanced cycle performance of $Li_1.1V_0.9O_2$. (Chapter 2)
In Chapter 3, we focused on the unit cell system which contains olivine type of electrode material in a full-cell. Lithium iron phosphate ($LiFePO_4$, LFP) is one of the most used cathode materials instead of $LiCoO_2$ because of its excellent thermal stability and high theoretical capacity of 170 $mAhg^{-1}$. However, in an effort to use this material at the high temperature operation, especially in case of $C-LiFePO_4/graphite$ full-cell, there has a fatal capacity fading because $Fe^{2+}$ ion dissolved from carbon coated LFP and it induces parasitic reaction at the graphite surface. To alleviate such problem, we introduced isocyanate-based electrolyte additive. Introduction of electrolyte additive showed an improved cell performance at high temperature. Effect of electrolyte additive on the high temperature operation of $C-LiFePO_4/graphite$ was investigated by LSV, EIS, and XPS analysis. Isocyanate-based electrolyte additive may modify the electrode/electrolyte interphase of graphite anode, so the parasitic reaction caused by deposition of $Fe^{2+}$ ion can be decreased at high temperature opeation condition. In addition to that, isocyanate can remove impurity water in the electrolyte. From these results, it can be expected that ethyl isocyanate can as a bi-functional electrolyte additive. (Chapter 3)
Additionally, we investigated the effect of electrolyte on the electrode/electrolyte interfacial charac-teristics of $Li-O_2$ batteries, which is known as the next-generation lithium batteries. Carbonate-based electrolyte, conventionally used in LIBs, showed severe electrolyte decomposition at the cathode, so the long-term cycle performance was not good. In our experiments, we firstly introduced ionic liquid (IL) as co-solvent of carbonate based electrolyte. Blended electrolyte delayed the electrolyte decomposition at the cathode and showed enhanced cycle performance. From the electrochemical analysis and surface analysis, the effect of electrode/electrolyte interphase of oxygen cathode was investigated and the way to further improvement will be discussed.
