In modern warfare, fast/ sustainable operation performance is important based on remote operations of warships and the diversification of large weapon systems. Therefore, many countries plan to have combat support ships, and existing combat support ships become larger and larger under changing trends of warship.
Such a change in warship improves the qualitative and quantitative ability in terms of general cargo and fuel supply capacity, but it is failed to match with the change in terms of combat support system. Although missiles play an important role in attack/defense, there is no combat support system which can reload missiles on the sea. Even the U.S. Navy, the most advanced naval force at this time, doesn’t have a missile reloading system fitted to current VLS, and practically no research has been done in this field after the external missile reloading system was proposed in 1960s. Thus, missile reloading system on the sea is worth to research, and the importance will become larger and larger. To realize the system, a feasibility study has to be performed, and introducing/developing possible system concept is the most important step at this moment. After analyzing many current systems, applying current missile loading system to warships has many limitations. Therefore, new concept missile reloading system is designed, and the system is named MTIS(Maritime Transfer/Installation System for battleship missile)
The system is proposed as a manipulator form for compensating movement of warship and safe delivery of missiles on the sea. To verify the system, warship movement and workspace are determined based on vessel design criteria for replenishment at sea (RAS), and warship movement compensation, missile delivery/installation possibility are verified using simulation. The system is also verified based on the link structure/length and stress analysis.
Through those various methods to verify the proposed system, the research demon-strated a feasibility of the MCDIS(Missile Canister Delivery/Installation System) and proposed existing possibilities for future research directions.
