Electrical thrusters have gained much attention as the propulsion system for spacecrafts or satellites due to their unique advantages over the conventional chemical thrusters such as high exhaust velocity. It results in the propellant mass reduction which eventually decreases the launch mass and cost, leading to enhancement of the payload capacity and mission lifetime. Especially, as the small satellites are expected to replace the large satellites for advanced missions, the low power and high performance propulsion system, i.e. electrical thruster, is considered to be a key element. Also, the simple structure, high ion density and thrust density of the Hall thruster are suitable for the miniaturized low power thruster. Miniaturization of the thruster is accompanied by many challenging scientific and technical issues such as optimization of the geometrical discharge structure and magnetic field, reduction of magnetic pole heating and channel wall erosion due to the large surface-to-volume ratio of the plasma, etc. These technical difficulties lead to lowered thrust and power efficiency compared to those of kW class large thrusters. In this thesis, it has been attempted to understand how the geometrical structure of the discharge region is related to the performance characteristics of the low power (i 300 W) Hall thruster.
In order to understand the center core effect in the discharge region, the thruster performance and plume plasma characteristics of the Hall thruster with/without the center core in the discharge region, i.e. an annular type Hall thruster (AHT) and a cylindrical type Hall thruster (CHT), are compared. The CHT exhibits significantly higher ion current and propellant utilization due to the multi-charged ions generated by the longer ion residence time in the discharge region than in the AHT. As a result, CHTs operate at lower mass flow rate and generate higher specific impulse than AHT. The narrow ion energy distribution function (IEDF) of the CHT indicates clearer separation of the ionization region and acceleration region than in AHT. Nevertheless, the oblique magnetic field line with respect to the thruster axis in CHT induces the radial electric field component that accelerates ions to a large angle. As a result, the broad plume angle of CHT causes the large thrust loss. Consequentially, the thrust and anode efficiency of CHT are lower than those of AHT.
Performance characteristics of low power CHT are investigated by varying the length of the annular region and diameter of the discharge region. First, the role of the annular region in CHT is studied with changing the depth of the annular region in front of the anode by analyzing the measured electron and ion currents, thrust, anode efficiency, propellant and current utilizations, and ion energy distribution function. As the depth of the annular region is increased from 0 to 10 mm with the fixed length of the cylindrical region, the discharge current and the electron current are decreased due to the magnetic field topology inside the annular region while the ion current changes little. Despite the high current utilization of the long annular region by the reduced electron current, the lowering of the electric potential at the high electron density region brings about the down shift of the ion energy distribution function. As a result, thrust, specific impulse and anode efficiency decrease as the annular region is lengthened.
Second, an investigation on the discharge region diameter has been performed by using three different thrusters with channel diameters of 28, 40, and 50 mm under various operational conditions. As the neutral density increases by the reduced channel diameter or increased mass flow rate, ionization and multi-charged ion generation are enhanced. The high multi-charged ion generation rate raises the propellant utilization and current utilization by the large ratio of ion current to discharge current. The large magnetic mirror ratio of the smaller CHT additionally enhances electron confinement in the discharge region which reduces the electron current. Therefore, in all cases, the higher current utilization and propellant utilization are achieved for the smaller CHT. Nevertheless, the large plume angle of the small CHT causes thrust loss, resulting in the reduction of the anode efficiency. As a result, the anode efficiency and thrust of the larger thruster become higher as the anode power is raised.
Based on the study, we suggest that CHT is advantageous for the satellite with high payload fraction due to the high specific impulse and propellant utilization of CHT. And AHT shows merits for the satellite with limited power budget because of the high total efficiency of AHT. In addition, we found that the CHT shows best performance in the absence of the annular region in front of the anode.
