The purpose of this study is to (1) investigate the potential of educational games in encouraging learners to continue study outside the game context and (2) suggest a design strategy to enhance educational effectiveness while maintaining enjoyment as a game. Starting from exploring fundamental elements of game, the study defined the roles of game rules as providing limit/obstacle, multiple valid choices and uncertain outcome. These were compared to the characteristics of learning activities which does not provide such rules. The study suggests ‘endogenous challenge’ to create a unified gameplay experience using the two different types of activity. Unity, interdependence, and minimal independence for learning are presented as the conditions for endogenous challenge. Two versions of educational games were developed and evaluated to verify the effectiveness of the design approach. The results showed that endogenous challenge in educational game had a strong positive impact on learner’s motivation to learn outside the game context while not losing the fun part and learning gains.
