In this paper, I analyze how R&D cooperation decisions are affected by asymmetric spillovers and R&D productivities between firms that engage in Cournot competition in duopoly market. It is shown that the change in R&D investment by a firm following cooperation depends on the gap between the firm’s spillover rates and the R&D productivity. In consequence, cooperation increases total R&D investment when the spillovers of both firms are high. As the gap between productivities of the two firms widens, the total R&D investment in the industry becomes more dependent on the R&D investment of the leading firm. In contrast to the case of symmetric spillovers, only a very limited range of spillovers makes cooperation beneficial to both firms when the firms have asymmetric spillovers and R&D productivities. If the gap of productivities becomes large, whereas the following firm’s profitable spillover range is bigger, the leading firm’s profitable spillover range becomes limited. Asymmetric spillovers and productivities widen the potential conflict between maximizing the total welfare and maximizing the profit of each firm.
본문에서는 비대칭적 지식확산과 R&D 생산성이 복점산업내 꾸르노 경쟁을 하는 두 기업간의 R&D 협동결정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. 협동에 따른 R&D 투자량의 변화는 기업간의 지식확산 수준과 R&D 생산성의 차이에 따라 결정된다. 결과적으로 산업의 총 R&D 투자량은 두 기업의 지식확산 수준이 높을때 증가한다. 기업사이의 R&D 생산성에서의 격차가 심해질수록 총 R&D 투자는 선두기업의 R&D 투자량에 더 영향을 받는다. 대칭적 정보확산에서와는 반대로 비대칭적 지식확산과 R&D 생산성 하에서는 매우 제한적인 지식확산 구간에서만 협동은 두 기업 모두에게 이익이다. R&D 생산성에서의 격차가 심해질수록 후발기업의 이익인 지식확산 구간은 증가하고 선두기업의 이익인 지식확산 구간은 감소한다. 또한 비대칭적 지식확산과 R&D 생산성은 사회적후생의 최대화와 개별기업의 이익 최대화에서의 잠재적 갈등을 더 이르킨다.
