Over the last few years, multiple radio-access technologies (multi-RATs) have been highlighted, where multi-mode terminals (MMTs) are connected to various wireless networks. Since simultaneous transmissions for parallel multi-RATs require a lot of energy, energy-efficient strategies are potentially beneficial. This work studies a bit and power adaptation (BPA) approach for the energy-efficient operation of multi-RATs. First of all, a switched RAT problem is investigated. It is observed that, without non-zero power constraint, maximizing the energy-efficiency leads to selection of a single RAT. Then, machine-learning-based BPA (ML-BPA) scheme is addressed with the aim to adapt a parameter set of bit and power, thus enhancing the energy efficiency of the network. A two-dimensional capacity (2D-CAP) feature space is proposed to reflect the link states accurately and to enable the practical use of machine-learning. From numerical results, it is observed that the 2D-CAP feature compensates for a large fraction of the performance loss induced by the imperfect feature space. Moreover, the performance of the proposed ML-BPA scheme is close to the ideal parameter search solution.
