Grain growth behavior of P2O5-doped BaTiO3 has been investigated at 1250℃ in different sintering atmospheres. Sintering in a wet 99.93N2-0.07H2 atmosphere, grain growth behavior was stagnant in pure BaTiO3 samples, but abnormal in BaTiO3 samples containing P2O5. Most of abnormal grains contained {111} twin lamellae and the number density of abnormal grains increased as P2O5 concentration increased. As oxygen partial pressure increased from wet 99.93N2-0.07H2 to Air, the number density of abnormal grains containing twin lamellae increased. Sintering in dry H2, on the other hand, the grain growth behavior was normal and there was no significant difference in average grain size with P2O5 concentration. An X-ray diffraction and TEM-EDS revealed that a Ba6Ti17O40 second phase was present in P2O5-doped BaTiO3 samples, irrespective of the sintering atmosphere, and its amount increased with increasing the P2O5 concentration. TEM observations showed that the grain boundary was rough in H2 and was faceted in wet 99.93N2-0.07H2 and Air for all the undoped and P2O5 doped samples. These results show that P2O5 induces the formation of a Ba6Ti17O40 phase, suggesting that phosphor replace titanium in BaTiO3. The increase in the number density of abnormal grains containing twin lamellae with increasing P2O5 concentration is attributed to the increase in the amount of Ba6Ti17O40, of which the particles were identified to be the origin of {111} twin formation in a previous investigation[Acta mater.49:1373-1381(2001)]. The increase in the number density of twin lamellae containing abnormal grains with increasing the oxygen partial pressure is attributed to an increase in the fraction of faceted boundary. P2O5 appears to induce the formation of Ba6Ti17O40 second phase particles and enhance the formation of {111} twins. {111} twin-assisted abnormal grain growth is enhanced with the addition of P2O5 and an increase of oxygen partial pressure.
