This research paper is about knowledge creation process of open-source communities, a kind of private-collective innovation network as a competitor to firms. I use data on about 33 thousands of development projects and 6.7 millions of user behavior events from Github, a large open source community forum.
Referring to the theory of user innovation such as open-source, which lead users more likely to innovate than producers to meet their own needs immediately, and analyzing the data from the user behavior events, I confirmed the transfer of tacit knowledge between two separate subgroups: developer users and end users, as suggested by the theory of organizational knowledge creation process.
And I found that open-source projects have more both end users and lead users tend to have more productivity in the development of source-code. But, more developer users tend not to have more productive.
The results have implications; Absorptive capacity for user’s needs, tacit knowledge, has more of an impact on the productivity than production capacity for the explicit knowledge.
본 논문은 오픈소스 커뮤니티를 예로 사용자 혁신 조직의 지식창출 프로세스를 관찰하였다. 이를 위해 Github 이라는 글로벌 오프소스 네트워크에서 3만3천여개의 프로젝트와 6백70여만 건의 사용자 활동 데이터를 추출하였다.
오픈소스 운동 같은 사용자 혁신은 스스로 니즈를 발굴하고 제품에 반영하는 선도사용자가 주도한다는 이론을 토대로 분석한 결과, 선도사용자 그룹이 소비자 그룹과 생산자 그룹으로 나뉘어지며, 소비자 그룹의 암묵지가 생산자 그룹에 이전되어 형식지로 바뀌는 과정이 기존의 지식창출 이론을 따르는 것으로 나타났다.
또한 , 오픈소스 커뮤니티 내 생산자 그룹 구성원의 수가 많다고 해서 생산성이 높아지는 않으며 , 반대로 소비자 그룹과 선도사용자 구성원의 수가 생산성에 더 큰 영향을 끼치는 것을 확인하였다.
이와 같은 연구결과는 사용자 혁신 커뮤니티에서 형식지를 창출하는 생산자 프로세스의 능력보다 암묵지인 니즈를 발굴하여 프로세스에 흡수하는 능력이 지식창출의 생산성에 더 큰 영향을 미침을 시사하고 있다.
