A boiler is a complex system comprised of numerous components. The evaporator in a boiler which con-sists of metal tubes and membrane, is one of the most important parts in a steam boiler. Feedwater passes through the inside evaporator tube and is boiled by heat absorption from furnace.
During the boiler startup process, the feedwater enters the inlet of evaporator as subcooled water, and it starts to vaporize by heat input from furnace. Two phase flow, therefore, spontaneously increases the flowrate at the outlet of evaporator more than that at the inlet of evaporator because of swelling phenomena. The ex-treme volume expansion by phase change inside boiler tube causes the discrepancy of inlet and exit flowrates. If this discrepancy is not carefully managed, the boiler startup process is greatly fluctuating. The swelled vol-ume significantly influences on the dynamic design of boiler startup. For the stable boiler operation, this swelled volume must be properly removed. Hence, the development of proper prediction method of the swell-ing effect is very important.
The objectives of this thesis are to develop the solution algorithm of swelling effect by numerical inves-tigation and to verify the developed algorithm by comparing it with the actual plant operation data.
Previous researches for swelling effect calculation were only based on the lumped system modeling for sub-critical boiler. For accurate calculation of the swelling effect, this thesis considers the distributed pa-rameter method instead of lumped system and heat transfer and fluid momentum equation in evaporator were also included. 1D fluid dynamics in evaporator were calculated by SIMPLE(Semi-Implicit Method for Pres-sure Linked Equation) and SIMPLER(SIMPLE Revised) algorithm.
The operation data of 700MW power plant were used to verify the developed algorithm. All measured data and the predicted data from new algorithm were matched very well within 9.1% error range. With newly developed algorithm, the major parameters effect on swelling pheonomena were investigated. Heating rate was found to be a primary parameter to mostly impact on swelling effect.
