Since energy saving for apartment complexes is a rising issue, many related researches have been attempted over the past years. Most studies used computational simulations associated with energy loads according to the various design parameters and the layouts of apartment buildings. Although the building geometry such as shape is an important parameter, it is difficult to perform simulations trough an integrated building model because of the individualized characteristics of each simulation case. Therefore, systematically prepared building templates are required for facilitating case dependent energy performance estimations for apartment housing. In this study, general trends on individual apartment energy simulation cases are systematically analyzed and virtual building model based simulations are suggested for energy sensitive apartment house design with different sets of design variables. It would contribute to the simplification of simulation procedures by acting as a set of default templates.
In therms of methodology, there are two main procedures. Firstly, the regulations associated with U-value of the wall, ventilation, and performance of windows which have to be adapted to virtual apartment model are analyzed. Secondly, virtual building models for energy sensitive apartment simulations are understood through previous studies based on their modeling concept and objectives. As a result, existing building simulation models are to be classified into several groups in association with solar access or air current of a single-apartment building as well as the floor and unit of it. Most energy simulations have been made with flat type apartment but tower type also gets introduced with the increase of the layout for tower shaped apartment buildings. The Unit size of an apartment model designed for simulation is typically based on the practical examples. 85m2 area is considered as general size in majority of estimated examples. Concerning unit size, 45-49pyeong (120m2), 32pyeong (85m2), and 23pyeong (60m2) are considered to be large, medium, and small size, respectively. For the evaluation of energy load for cooling and heating in a unit household, the location of the household unit in the building influences on the energy performance.
Ultimately, there could be two types of users who would use the developed virtual apartment building models in this study. One group would evaluate energy sensitivity in relation with various design variables purely for research purposes. The other user group would evaluate the energy efficiency for their own specific apartment building designs. Through the establishment of the templates for virtual building models facilitating energy simulations of apartment complexes, users could easily access the simulation instances of apartment housing and also could avoid unnecessary repetitive building modeling processes.
