Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have several advantages over the semiconductor SA mirrors (SESAMs) such as low saturation intensity, faster recovery time, broad spectral range, large third-order non-linear susceptibilities and easy fabrication. In using SWNT-SAs to mode lock an all-fiber laser, to obtain an even shorter pulse width requires a SWNT-SA with an even greater modulation depth, where it is inserted in the fiber, leading to a high absorption of light in a small area.
The SWNT mode lockers suffer from the optical power induced thermal damage such that the SWNTs are burned out with the optical power of less than 30 mW. It turns out that the structure of CNTs may change under certain laser conditions
Although in the case of SWNT-SAs, where the optical properties are also expected to change by laser heating due to continuous exposure to high-energy pulses in the laser cavity, up to now, no study has been systematically performed on the changes in the output pulse characteristics and the SWNT-SAs damage.
In this work, the long-term stability of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser is investigated using a sand-wich type SWNT-SA fabricated with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and SWNTs film. We found that the power and spectral bandwidth of the output pulse vary when the SWNT-SA is exposed to high power pulses in the cavity. Characteristics of SWNT-SA also change over time when irradiated by a CW laser of ~4.5 mW power. Graphitization of SWNTs film is verified based on the changes of the optical micrographs, Raman spectra, and SEM images before and after the irradiation with a laser.
In order to acquire a stable mode-locked laser pulse for a long period of time, the pump power transmit-ting the SWNT-SAs must be below the associated threshold level, for the characteristics of SWNT-SAs change with time due to light-induced damages. It could be inferred that this plays an important role in limiting the enhancement of the output power or lowering the pulse width of a mode-locked laser. This necessitates SWNT-SAs that are insensitive to light-induced damages. It was confirmed that the higher the absorbance of SWNT-SAs, the higher the damage threshold and better mode-locking traits. Furthermore, the usage of SWNT-SAs with lower purity showed lower damage levels at high pump power.
By controlling the total dispersion of the cavity and adjusting the position of the output coupler and SWNT-SAs, the optimal mode-locking performance and pulse characteristics were obtained, respectively. To enhance the SWNT-SAs characteristics, a pre-treatment process using high-power laser pulses was suggested, and to especially improve the thermal characteristics, gold nanoparticles showing good heat conductivity were added in the SA and analyzed with respect to the tendency in thermal damage levels and mode-locking characteristic variations.
Strong resistance to light-induced damages and superior mode-locking traits were obtained through SWNT-SAs made with HiPCO type, 65 wt% pure SWNTs. Addition of gold nanoparticles further enhanced the characteristics. The produced SWNT-SAs were pre-treated, and through this process it was possible to acquire laser pulses showing the best performance.
Mode-locking was carried out by inserting the produced SWNT-SA into the optimally designed fiber os-cillator, and an output pulse with a 130 fs pulse width, 34.32 nm bandwidth, and 11.57 mW power was ob-tained. The result shows the highest output power value ever achieved from a SWNT-SA film-based all-fiber mode-locked laser with a pulse width lower than 150 fs.
Miniaturization of the fiber oscillator was also performed and an all-fiber laser system to amplify the output pulse was constructed. The output pulse was amplified via the all-fiber amplifying laser system and characteristics showing 85 mW in output power, 77 nm in bandwidth and 46 fs (Gaussian fitting) in pulse width were obtained.
