Internet trolling is known as posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. The aim of this study is to disclose the correlation between user`s rewards and the social network structural characteristics in trolling community, measured by structural holes, applying the brokerage and closure network theories in social capital development on online communities. So this study conducts the multiple regression anal-ysis comparing two online communities. Trolling community ‘Ilbe’, and ‘Agora’ which is known as a typical online discussion community. Our results shows that in ‘Agora’, popular users are tend to connect between the sub networks as a ‘broker’. But in ‘Ilbe’, popular users tend to not connect sub networks and even avoid the relation-ships with the neighbors. This study suggests that empirical analysis using brokerage and closure can help to understand the condition of both local & global network and structural features of online trolling group.
인터넷 트롤링(Trolling)이란, 인터넷 문화에서 고의적으로 논쟁이 되거나, 선동적이거나, 엉뚱한 내용, 또는 공격적이거나 불쾌한 내용을 포럼이나 채팅방, 블로그, 온라인 커뮤니티 같은 공용 인터넷 공간에 게시하여 사람들의 감정적인 반응을 유발시키고 모임의 생산성을 저하시키는 행위를 가리킨다. 이 연구는‘구조적 공백’이론을 통해 온라인 트롤링 커뮤니티에서 유저의 보상과 연관 있는 구조적 특성을 찾고자 했다. 이를 위해 트롤링 사이트‘일베’와 온라인 토론장‘아고라’두 커뮤니티의 데이터를 수집하여 다중회귀분석을 진행했다. 그 결과, ‘아고라’에서는 인기있는 유저 일수록 서브 네트워크를 연결하는 교량 역할을 하는 것으로 나왔지만 ‘일베’에서는 인기 있는 유저일수록 교량 역할을 하지 않고 로컬 내 이웃과의 관계도 기피하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 결속형 구조와 교량형 구조적 특성을 활용한 실증적 연구로서 로컬과 글로벌 네트워크를 동시에 파악하고 특히 트롤링 집단에서 두드러지는 구조적 특성을 파악하는데 그 의의가 있다.
