The research was mostly focused on the fabrication of lens array whose individual lens is able to adjust its focal length, thus most parts of this manuscript are spent for the description of auto-focus (AF) mechanism and relative comparison of the proposed AF scheme with the conventional device and troubleshooting to implement the liquid lens array with required specification. The fluidic lens has a variety of applications due to its inherent property by which it can change the focal length by controlling electrical power without any mechanical moving part, which guarantees the strong durability and reliability.
Fluidic lens consisting of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) membrane is a promising optical device due to the excellent optical properties. The other fluidic lens category is lens using a liquid wettability to activate the passive fluid.
In this thesis, I am addressing various physical properties of fluidic lens using PDMS membrane and the fluidic device that is actuated by electrowetting principle which covers the electrical and mechanical specifications and operational properties that are determined by both hydrophobic layer and the lens design. Finally we fabricated the fluidic device of floating water in between passive oil phases to realize optical component for a device with high optical power that should consume extremely small electrical power.
For a single lens based on PDMS membrane, the actuating force of the lens is generated by a voice-coil that exerts magnetic force to the ring-shape magnet, which moves upward and downward along the optical axis. The focal length was measured to be 25 $D$ and, it demonstrated clearness by showing images captured by a digital camera of 12 megapixels, which was set behind the lens at 10 $cm$ away. In the next step, I needed to solve the optical problem such as spherical aberration that was not controllable with the single curvature lens. In order for that purpose, a fluidic lens with bi-sided PDMS membranes of different thickness that matches each other to reduce a spherical aberration was fabricated. It was operated with magnetic repulsion induced by the current in the voice-coil. The proposed lens was observed to have the optical power variation of 187$\sim$44 diopters. The spherical aberration of the proposed lens was observed to be negligibly small compared to that of plano-convex glass lens with the same dimension. The first membrane deforms by $\sim$5$\%$ and the second membrane deforms by $\sim$ 1.5$\%$ regarding the critical point of curvature on each side with no bias applied.
The part of this research was to tackle the residual problems in order for the fluidic lens of electrowetting such as a low optical power \cite{pers_029, pers_039}. In order to do that, I tried to make a specific lens structure, which realizes a floating lens of liquid. This study presents a liquid lens using electrowetting principle that employs a floating lens in between actuating liquids \cite{pers_045}. Its operating voltage was ranging from 0 to 60 voltages. The image through the lens was clear enough to see the 6.35 $LP/mm$ on USAF 1951 1x, and the focal length variation $\Delta$$f$ derived from the calculation was equal to $\sim$5.8 $mm$. The optical power variation using ${1}/{f}$ was $\sim$ 172 $D$ via the applied voltage range.
Other related works were to employ an water phase floating in between the oils. The lens has a shape of double-sides surfaces that was operating with bias of 0 to 60 voltages. The focal length variation due to the mechanical fluctuation with a frequency of 200 $Hz$ was less than 10 $\mu$$m$. An image through the lens was clear such that it was possible to see the 5.65 $LP/mm$ on USAF
1951 1x, and the calculated focal length variation $\Delta$$f$ was equal to $\sim$ 12.63 $mm$. The calculation has shown that an optical power variation of ${1}/{f}$ $\sim$ 79 $D$ via the applied voltage as well.
The next part of this research was the lens fabrication with large aperture size, for which a polycarbonate (PC) substrate was used to implement a lens chamber with round slope surface, on which the Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) electrode was deposited. There was a trade-off between the angle and operation voltage, such that the operating voltage goes to high as the angle of the round slope increases.
The final objective of this thesis is to realize a fluidic lens array using electrowetting principle which is addressed at the last sections of the fabrication part, which covers various lens array structures and fabrication methods \cite{pers_051, pers_054}.
The last fluidic lens that is the final product of this research was the fluidic lens array using electrowetting principle constructed on the polycarbonate substrate. For this purpose, an array of fluidic lenses of 2 $mm$ $\sim$ 4.6 $mm$ diameter was implemented both on the glass and plastic (polycarbonate) substrate.
There were pros and cons when using a glass or a polycarbonate as a lens chamber. A lens array with glass substrate was good to guarantee the adhesion of ITO layer although it was quite hard to make an array of hole on the glass plate using NC(Numerical Control) milling process. However it was not possible to make a slope surface of sidewall using glass substrate. 10 $\times$ 10 = 100 lens array with circular truncated cone whose diameters are 2.4 $mm$ and 4.6 $mm$ was implemented, and most of lenses were well controlled in sync without any delay since all lenses were connected in parallel for the test. Every single lens has a focal length variation of $\sim$(-)10 to $\sim$ 20 $mm$ with working voltage of 0 to 60 $V$. The approaches addressed in this research will be applied for the possible solution of current solid lens system with some drawbacks that are not soluble at this moment, and this will lead to the industrialization of fluidic lens system in the near future and the realization of 3D display and so on, which are the final objectives for this research as well.
