Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to their promising advantages of a simple fabrication process, light weight and flexibility, have attracted considerable attention over the last decade for use in back lighting units in full-color displays, as well as in solid-state lighting applications. In order to realize OLEDs with high power efficiency, many research groups have made a lot of effort to obtain improved light extraction efficiency and low driving voltage. Although rapid progress has been made in controlling the optical and electrical system for high power efficiency of OLEDs, their complex and expensive methods have been hindered the widespread applications.
In this thesis, facile patterning methods are discussed for highly efficient OLEDs, including a solution-processible technique for the fabrication of out-coupling structures, a cross-pattering technique for the deposition of a multi-emissive layer, and soft lithography based on three-dimensional colloidal crystals for white emission from top-emitting OLEDs.
In chapter 2.1, we have demonstrated the preparation of an ordered hole pattern via a simple colloidal assembly technique and a sol-gel process without the use of any special equipment to enhance light extraction from LEDs. From two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystals, 2D TiO2 honeycomb structures were easily obtained by depositing TiOx sol solution. By applying the 2D TiO2 honeycomb structure on the backside of the glass substrate, the efficiency of a polymer LED, compared to the device without the structure, was increased without a significant change in the electroluminescence spectrum. This enhancement is attributed to the improved light extraction, which is due to the suppression of total internal reflection at the interface between the glass substrate and the air.
In chapter 2.2, we have demonstrated a simple fabrication method for an out-coupling structure to enhance light extraction from OLEDs. Spin-coating of SiO2 and TiOx sol mixture solution develops corrugated film. The structural evolution of the corrugation was explained by the localization of surface tension during the solvent evaporation. The structural parameters of the corrugated structure were characterized by varying the spin-coating speed and the mixing ratio of the solution. Compared to conventional devices, OLEDs with a corrugated structure at the backside of the glass substrate showed increased external quantum efficiency without change in the electroluminescence spectrum. The light extraction enhancement is attributed to the decreased incidence angle at the interface of glass substrate and air.
In chapter 2.3, we have demonstrated a simple method to fabricate out-coupling structures via solution-processing to enhance light extraction from OLEDs. Scattering layers were easily obtained by spin-coating a SiO2 sol solution containing TiO2 particles. Introducing the scattering layer and solution-processible corrugated structure as internal and external extraction layers, OLEDs showed increased external quantum efficiency without a change of the electroluminescence spectrum compared to conventional devices. Using these solution-processible out-coupling structures, nearly all-solution-processed OLEDs with enhanced light extraction could be fabricated. The light extraction enhancement is attributed to suppression of the light-trapping that arises at the interface of the glass substrate and the air by the out-coupling structures.
In chapter 3, we have applied a simple cross-patterning technique for the fabrication of phosphorescent white OLEDs with red, green, and blue (RGB) emitters; the resulting device has relatively low driving voltage and high color stability. The selectively cross-patterned multicolor emitting layer (EML) was easily prepared by using a metal mask without an alignment process. Not only was the characteristic of low driving voltage obtained but also the improved color stability, which can be ascribed to the simplified stack of the EML and the corresponding suppression of the biased shift in the recombination zone. The spatial distribution and variation of the stacked EML structure could explain the origin of the robust white emission. Compared to the conventional white OLED with a RGB simple stack, the cross-patterned multi-EML device showed a slight change in color coordinates in the luminance range of 100-8000 cd/m2, with a decrease in the driving voltage of 0.5-2.0 V, while the luminous efficiency was maintained.
In chapter 4, we have demonstrated that white emission can be obtained from nano-structured top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TEOLEDs) based on a blue emitting layer (EML). The nano-structured TEOLEDs have been fabricated on nano-patterned substrates, in which both optical micro-cavity and scattering effects occur simultaneously. Due to the combination of these two effects, the electroluminescence spectra of the nano-structured device with a blue EML exhibited not only blue but also yellow colors, which correspond to the intrinsic emission of the EML and the resonant emission of the micro-cavity effect. Consequently, it was possible to produce white emission from nano-structured TEOLEDs without employing a multimode micro-cavity. The intrinsic emission wavelength can be varied by altering the dopant used for the EML. Furthermore, the emissive characteristics turned out to be strongly dependent on the nano-pattern sizes of the nano-structured devices.
