Molecules have abundant structures such as vibrational and rotational states that atoms do not have. In this dissertation, we theoretically investigate characteristics of rotational states of linear molecules and propose its potential applications which include molecular alignment, quantum gyroscopic motion, quantum computation, and entangled rotors. We first investigate in detail the Hamiltonian of molecular rotational states under electromagnetic fields. Then we show how one can control the rotational states and how to use them for the several purposes mentioned above.
First, we present quantum mechanical explanations for unresolved phenomena observed in field-free molecular alignment by a femtosecond laser pulse. Quantum phase analysis of molecular rotational states reveals the physical origin of following phenomena: (1) strong alignment peaks appear periodically and the temporal shape of each alignment peak changes in an orderly fashion depending on molecular species, (2) the strongest alignment is not achieved at the first peak, and (3) the transition between aligned and anti-aligned states is very fast compared to the time scale of rotational dynamics. These features are understood in a unified way analogous to that describing a carrier-envelope-phase-stabilized mode-locked laser.
Second, we provide a way of generating and observing molecular quantum gyroscopic motion that resembles the gyroscopic motion of classical rotors. After producing a non-spreading rotational wavepacket called cogwheel state, one can generate a gyroscopic precession motion by applying an external magnetic field interacting through rotational magnetic dipole moment. A Coulomb-explosion technique is suggested to observe the gyroscopic motion. Despite limited molecular species, the observation of the gyroscopic motion can be adopted as a new nonspectrosocpic method to measure rotational g-factors of molecules.
Third, we propose a novel quantum computer architecture which is robust against decoherence and scalable. As a qubit, we adopt rotational states of a nonpolar ionic molecule trapped in an ion-trap. It is revealed that the rotational-state qubits are much more immune to decoherence than the conventional electronic-state qubits of atomic ions. A complete method set for state preparation, single-qubit gate, controlled-NOT gate, and qubit-readout suitable for the rotational-state qubits is provided. Our scheme is expected to be a promising candidate to build a large-scale quantum computer.
Fourth, we propose an entangled quantum system that consists of molecular rotors. Rotating molecules induce rotational magnetic dipole moment proportional to their angular momentum. By adopting appropriate qubit levels, direct magnetic dipole-dipole interaction can entangle the rotational states of molecules without help of laser fields. The entangled molecular rotors can be adopted to practical applications such as test of Bell’s inequality, quantum teleportation, and quantum cryptography.
It is expected that our theoretical suggestions can be implemented experimentally using current technologies without serious diffculties because we devised the ideas keeping feasibility in mind. We also expect that our studies given here can be extended further to broad subjects, e.g., orientation of polar molecules, three-dimensional alignment of asymmetric top molecules, or modulation of optical fields using a coherently rotating molecular cluster.
