In this article, I study motivation and decision-making of philanthropic giving by using data on Ko-rean Business Group’s philanthropic giving response to earthquake in Japan in March 2011.
I Interviewed about motives, resource and decision making process of philanthropic giving with em-ployees who are working for business groups. Base on the interviews, I had cross-analysis and regression analysis. I find that 1-10 chaebol respond significantly higher than the other groups. And main motives of philanthropic giving is altruistic motives, but business groups also consider strategic motives in parallel with altruistic motives. Chaebol tend to impose philanthropic giving on affiliates. And Business groups estimate amount of philanthropic giving in the light of Japanese special culture, other companies’ amount of philan-thropic, the strategic importance of Japan and association with Group`s CSR strategy and philanthropic giving for Japan earthquake.
본 논문은 2011년 3월 일본 대지진이라는 사건과 관련하여 한국 대기업집단이 기부금을 지출한 동기 및 의사결정 사항에 대해 연구한 것이다. 2011년 4월 공정거래위원회가 발표한 상호출자제한기업집단 중 30대 재벌과 동일인이 법인인 집단, 공기업집단의 실무자를 대상으로 기부금 지출 동기, 기부금 Resource, 기부금액 설정 근거에 대해 인터뷰 형식으로 진행하였으며, 인터뷰 결과에 대해 교차분석 및 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 1-10대 재벌이 기부금에 반응하는 정도가 다른 집단에 비해 높았으며, 대기업집단의 기부금 지출 동기는 주로 이타적 동기로 이루어졌으나 전략적 동기가 동시에 고려되었다는 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 또한 재벌일 경우 계열사 배분의 경우가 많을 것이라는 가설에 대해서도 유의한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 마지막으로 일본 대지진 기부금액 산정 관련하여 일본의 특수한 문화 뿐 아니라 타 기업의 기부금액, 일본의 전략적 중요성, 그룹 내 CSR 전략과의 연계 등 다양한 요소를 기준으로 기부금액을 산정하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 다른 연구에 비해 기업의 실제적 기부금 지출 동기와 의사결정 사항을 밝혀 현실적인 CSR 장려 정책 수립 시 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라는 연구 의의를 가진다.
