Although numerous researchers studied stock price manipulation, literatures about manipulation through rumors are scanty. Jos Van Bommel(2003) analyzed rumor games where honest and bluffing rumors can be profitable. However, false rumor cannot affect the stock price in his model. This paper aims to analyze stock price manipulation through spreading false rumor. First, I present a model where followers and market makers believe that they are in the honest rumor game, whereas the stock price is manipulated. The model shows that profit from the manipulator is higher in illiquid stock market. In order to deepen the research, I extend the model into a game where four types of players are behaving to optimize their profits. In the manipulation game, followers have incentives to trade in the market even if the stock price could be manipulated with a certain probability. The results show the effects of the changes in the probabilities of informed trades or manipulation on the followers’ and manipulator’s demands and profits.
