Are there economic growth and productivity spillovers from FDI to domestic firms, and, if so, how much the government should subsidize for promoting FDI inflow? To examine these questions there were many studies have been discussed with different empirical results. By reviewing past studies, I found consistent problems in empirical methods and data. In this paper, to adjust such problems, I used FDI data of Korean manufacturing firms rather than foreign stock share which has been used in previous works. In addition, by using 2sls to control the endogeneity of main variables, FDI and productivity, the possible statistical errors are also minimized. The main result shows that there exists inter-industry productivity spillover while there is no intra-industry spillover. This is different if I do not control endogeneity problem. These results explain that FDI does affect the domestic economy and productivity in positive way. However, spillover effect is weakened when the endogeneity is controlled. Therefore, the further study is required to conclude whether the current government subsidy is excessive or not.
외국인직접투자로 인한 생산성 파급효과와 경제효과는 과연 있을까? 만약 있다면 정부의 외국인직접투자 유치를 위한 적극적인 보조정책은 합리적인가? 이 의문을 풀기 위해 과거 많은 연구들이 다른 결론을 가지고 논쟁하고 있다. 나는 과거의 논문들중 통계적 오류와 데이터의 결함을 발견하였다. 본 연구에서는, 기존연구에서 사용하였던 외국인 주식 자본율 대신 실제 외국인 직접투자액을 사용함으로써 데이터의 신빙성을 높였다. 다음으로 내생성을 통제한 통계분석으로 기존의 통계적 결함도 밝혀내었다. 본 연구에서는 산업간 생산성 파급효과는 없는것으로 나타났으나 산업내 파급효과는 있는것으로 나타났다. 따라서 외국인직접투자의 경제적효과는 있는것으로 보인다. 하지만 여전히 외국인직접투자 유치를 위한 적극적인 정책의 타당성을 밝히기에는 무리가 있다고 본다.
