This thesis consists of three studies investigating word-of-mouth(WOM) and corresponding strategies for consumers and companies. There are recent developments in literature of word-of-mouth (WOM). First, the researches on the firm-created WOM are emerging. Because the importance of WOM activity is well-known for firms, they put a lot of efforts to create or facilitate the positive WOM for their products nowadays. These “promotional” reviews are interesting new phenomena. Second, the needs to decompose the dimensions of WOM rise in literature. The valence and volume of online reviews are most commonly used dimensions of WOM. Some researchers find that further decomposition of dimensions helps to identify the role and effects of WOM. Our studies contribute to the recent literature of WOM theoretically, empirically and methodologically. In chapter 2, we develop a new method incorporating Bayesian outlier detection and data augmentation techniques. The proposed method enables us to investigate phenomena involving unobservable independent variables such as promotional reviews. The major challenge of researches on the firm-created WOM arises from the fact that the firms hardly reveal their efforts on promotional WOM activities. Instead of direct observation, we can indirectly infer the promotional reviews through abnormal review posting behaviors. When firms try to manipulate online reviews, they inevitably need to post a large volume of reviews, and we can observe abnormal volume of reviews on the incidence. Our method detects these outliers using Bayesian outlier detection technique, and then includes them as data for further modeling under the data augmentation framework. The method can be applied for similar research environment that includes unobservable, yet indirectly inferable, independent variables. In chapter 3, we examine the effects of online and offline word-of-mouth on box-office sales. We model online and offline word-of-mouth using the Bayesian learning framework and decomposed components of online reviews. Because the quality of movies fluctuates widely, consumers are uncertain about the actual quality of movies before the releases. Depending on marketing mix and movie features, consumers shape their diffuse quality belief. After the release, the word-of-mouth activities inform consumers about the actual quality of the movie and make them to adjust their beliefs about the movie quality from their initial belief. Consumer chooses a movie depending on their quality beliefs. Marketing expenditure improves consumer’s initial quality belief, but it’s not correlated to the actual quality of the movie. On the other hand, the valence of online word-of-mouth is significantly correlated to the actual quality of movie but it’s not correlated to the initial quality belief of consumers. The preliminary analysis among online reviews among 3 different websites of movies show that the cumulative means of ratings are highly correlated among different websites, while the dynamic changes of valence are not. Hence, we assumed that offline and online WOM shares the overall mean of valence but not the dynamics of it. Our results resolve a confliction, in previous literature, that the volume of online word-of-mouth has a significant impact on box-office sales but not the valence of it. Moreover, our results contribute to the literature by finding the differential influences of online and offline WOM. In chapter 4, we investigate the daily seasonality of box-office revenues and WOM effects. The distributors try to facilitate WOM activities among consumers by launching previews or releasing their movies earlier than competitors. Many distributors decide their release dates on a daily level. Most of movies are released on Thursday in Korea (Friday in U.S), but still a large portion of movies are released on Wednesday (Thursday in U.S). Even one-day early release may help the movies for their success by avoiding competition and gaining a larger number of early consumers for WOM activities. The conditions for success depend on the daily seasonality, competition, and movie quality. Because the release dates of movies are concentrated on certain days, the observed seasonality of box-office sales is distorted. We propose a model decomposing WOM effects, underlying seasonality, and market expansion effects due to new releases on a daily level. We find the optimal strategies for movies depending on their quality and competitors’.
