Robots are no longer limited in industrial settings. Unlike conventional industry robots, social robots are placed within the same physical space and interact directly with people. Because of this notable difference, on top of successfully performing its tasks or functions, it is essential for social robots to display socially ac-ceptable behaviors. For instinctive and natural human- robot interactions, social robots display various cues by adapting human-human interaction and people build mental models to understand the robot based on the cues. Therefore, designing cues that match people’s expectation and understanding of the robot is important. One robot is likely to conduct various tasks used by different users but in most cases a robot cannot readily change appearances to adapt to different usage contexts. Then how can a robot appropriately convey cues that match user and task attributes without altering its appearance?
The main aim of this study is to apply gender, a universal yet instinctive human trait, to behavioral design for social robots to express its state and usage context. For this, a robot that does not convey physical gender cues used speech interface to express its gender. Through the first experiment, task attribute match for each gender was verified which means that gender role stereotypes are applied to robots. The second experiment tested whether altering robot gender by speech to match task attributes in a multi- functioning robot was effective and acceptable. Different gender change patterns were tested through the experiment and people accepted robots that altered gender to match task attributes.
It can be inferred from the two experiments that other than altering appearance, voice interface itself was sufficient enough to express a robot’s gender which thus expressed task attributes. Furthermore, in a multi task conducting robot, when the robot’s gendered voice adjusted to match accordingly to its task shifts, people were able to recognize task changes which increased task and social attraction of the robot.
This research clarified that designers of social robot can effectively use speech interface to express robot gen-der to match robot’s usage context which would increase user’s acceptance of the robot. Also, design guideline about application of gender changing speech interface to match changing task attributes without altering
