Recently, the orders of commercial ships have declined while those of offshore plants have increased sharply in shipbuilding market. In response to this market change, shipbuilding companies are searching for optimal product mix in order to produce commercial ships as well as offshore plants with minimal additional investments to the facilities.
This study aims at optimizing the pre-erection (P.E.) area partition plans for ship block P.E. and off-shore block P.E. over the planning horizon based on future product mix forecast. Offshore plants P.E. area requires additional facility investment because the offshore blocks are usually much heavier than those of ships. We use DLP (Dynamic Layout Problem) methodology to find the optimal ratio of P.E. area partition considering the flexibility of future forecast change.
In this study, the material handling cost, operating cost, rearrangement cost and additional construc-tion cost for P.E. area are used for the optimal division. The optimal division for the P.E. area of offshore plants is then determined for ten years of planning horizon. The results are applied to the shipyard consider-ing the feasibility of business.
