This paper deals with the association of sound with color. While sound-to-color mapping has been of in-terest for a long time, no absolute final answer has been presented yet.
The aim of this research is to contribute to the exploration of cross-modal perception.
Since there is no absolute, common mapping between color (hue) and individual notes, this research was focused on the saturation/chroma association with individual notes, interval (both harmonic and melodic) and triads.
It was found that people tend to systematically associate individual notes, two-note intervals and triads with saturation of color in a linear way, based on the difference in octave range. Moreover, their associations showed the same tendency over time.
Also, characteristics of interval and triad did not have any significant effect on mapping results. Instead, it was because of the "average" register of intervals and/or triads that showed clear correspondence to the level of saturation.
This mapping can serve as one of the examples for further research and understanding of cross-modal perception and association processes from cognitive aspect, to explore whether there is correlation between auditory and visual cortices or not.
본 고는 소리와 색채 간 연계를 다루고 있다. 오랜 기간 소리와 색채의 맵핑에 관한 연구가 학계에서 주목을 받아 왔지만 이에 대한 명확한 결론이 아직 도출된 바 없다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 소리와 색채를 중심으로 하는 교차 양상 인지에 대해 심층적 탐구를 하는 것이다.
색채와 개별 음에 대한 절대적, 일반적 맵핑 기준이 존재하지 않기 때문에 본 연구에서는 채도 (彩度. Chroma)/색순도 (色純度. Saturation)와 개별 음-음정 (화성과 선율)-삼화음의 연계에 초점을 맞추었다.
실험 결과로서, 피실험자들은 색채의 채도를 옥타브 범주의 차이에 기반하여 선형으로 개별 음-음정 (두 개 음)-삼화음과 체계적 연결을 시도하는 경향이 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 특히 이런 색채와 소리 간 연계는 시간의 흐름에 관계없이 일정한 양상을 보였다. 하지만 음정과 삼화음의 본질적 특성이 어떠한 유의미성을 갖는 것이 아니라 채도 단계와의 밀접한 연관성을 보여주는 음정-삼화음의 "평균적 가늠 (Average Register)"에 의해 맵핑 결과가 도출된 것으로 밝혀졌다.
청각과 시각의 연계성을 평가하는 것에 초점을 맞춘 본 연구는, 특히 인지적 측면에서의 교차 양상 인지와 연계 프로세스에 대한 이해를 도모하고 향후 발전적인 연구를 하는데 있어 객관적인 참조 데이터로 활용될 것이다.
