Tire pressure affects vehicle safety and fuel economy. It is mandatory for car makers to equip a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in all passenger vehicles sold in U.S., EU and Korea. The need for a TPMS has grown dramatically since the mid 1980s. There are two types of TPMS: the direct and indirect TPMSs. The direct TPMS measures the absolute tire air pressure using a tire pressure sensor installed inside the tire, whereas the indirect TPMS estimates the tire pressure status based on such sensor signals as the wheel speed sensor from vehicle. Though the indirect method inherently suffers from inaccuracy in estimation of tire pressure relative to the direct method, it doesn’t require additional hardware or wiring, free of maintenance and potential battery discharge problem. In this work, an improved indirect TPMS algorithm based on the conventional wheel speed sensor signal is proposed to fully comply with the TPMS related regulations and market requirements. The proposed indirect TPMS algorithm consists of the data resampling, the frequency isolation procedure, and the tire torsional natural frequency estimation.
This work starts with investigation of the kinematics of tire, the relation between tire air pressure and tire natural frequency, and the wheel speed sensor mechanism and signal characteristics. Accounting for practicality, a tire-wheel torsional vibration system model is suggested, so that the parameters associated with spectral estimation based on the wheel speed sensor signals can be readily determined. It is shown that, among others, tire air pressure can be monitored by estimation of the system natural frequency. Since the wheel speed sensor signal is not time based but event based sampled, the signal should be resampled with a uniform sampling interval for proper spectral estimation. Several interpolation algorithms to resample the data are presented and the optimal resampling time interval and algorithm is selected based on the simulation results using the actual vehicle test data. For the improved spectral estimation performance, a frequency isolation procedure is effectively employed.
The simulation results with actual vehicle test data showed that the estimated tire frequency deviation is about 3~4Hz for the 25% tire pressure deflation and that the proposed indirect TPMS algorithm succeeds in estimating the tire pressure deflation by at least 25%.
