Metal nanoparticles (NPs) with a zero-dimensional structure have attracted a lot of attention to many researchers of state-of-the-art applications such as electronic, magnetic, and optical devices and metal NPs have been used as both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. However, most of metal NPs still involve agglomeration of NPs, and they result in a decline of their original activity. NP-Host structure material hybrids can be a good alternative to solve the problem of NPs agglomeration because host structure materials attach NPs on the surface and control the movement of NPs. Carbon nitride nanotubes (CNNTs) including heterogeneous nitrogen in the carbon network on the Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be used as the host structure material because of high binding energy with metal NPs on the surface. In addition, CNNTs can provide defects to anchor NPs on the carbon network surface via direct growth without an additional functionalization process such as an acid solution treatment, which can cause damage to the carbon network surface of CNTs.
In this Dissertation, cobalt or cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co or Co3O4 NPs)-CNNTs hybrids with a uniform distribution and no agglomeration of NPs on the surface of CNNTs were fabricated through new synthesis routes. In addition, Co or Co3O4 NPs-CNNTs hybrids materials were applied to the hydrogen generation rate from aqueous metal hydride (NaBH4) solution and to the peroxidase-like activity of organic substrate (TMB) with the existence of H2O2 as a catalyst, respectively.
First, Co NPs - CNNTs hybrids were fabricated to be based on the reduction of Co precursor on CNNTs in the presence of sodium hypophosphite, water and hydroxyl ion in alkaline ethylene glycol solution. Sodium hypophosphite acts as reducing agent of Co NPs. The size of Co NPs fabricated above method is controlled to about 2 nm. According to the increase of sodium hypophosphite concentration during the synthesis process, the scale of Co NPs is more uniform and smaller. Our density functional theory calculations provide the clue for the formation mechanism of these sized controllable Co NPs in the presence of sodium hypophosphite, water, Co2+ ions and OH- ions on pyridine-like nitrogen of CNNTs. First, two H-adatoms from water are bonded onto pyridine-liked nitrogen while sodium hypophosphite is bonded with oxygen of water. Next, the reduction of Co2+ ions occurs via combination with two electrons donated from these two H-adatoms. With Co NPs-CNNTs fabricated via this method, their catalytic activities for hydrogen generation from alkaline NaBH4 solution have been investigated. The Co NPs-CNNTs fabricated via this method shows a high hydrogen generation rate of 19.6 kg hydrogen/hr per 1kg catalyst from aqueous metal hydride solution. This superior catalytic activity about 82 times larger than that for the Co powder at a bulk state is attributed to the increase of specific reaction surface area by combination of Co NPs and CNNTs. In addition, Co NPs-CNNTs formed via mediation of two H-adatoms bonded in pyridine-liked nitrogen have about 1.5 times larger surface area than Co NPs-CNNTs formed in only pyridine-liked nitrogen, so hydrogen generation rate shows.
Next, Co3O4 NP-CNNT hybrids were fabricated to be based on the thermal-treatment in air condition after synthesizing Co(OH)2 shielded on CNNTs through a simple polyol process combined with Co(acac)3, triethylenglycol, and thermal-heating process. Co3O4 NP-CNNT hybrids showed Co3O4 NPs of 4 - 8 nm in size with a uniform distribution and no agglomeration on the surface of CNNTs. Co3O4 NP-CNNT hybrids indicates the superior peroxidase-like activity of 18, 19 times higher than that of bulk Co3O4 NPs and Fe3O4 NPs due to the stronger affinity with substrate molecules (TMB and H2O2) by the larger specific surface area of Co3O4 NPs anchored on CNNTs and an electron-transfer ability of CNNTs. Electron Spinning Resonance (ESR) provides the clue for the peroxidase-like redox role of Co3O4 NP-CNNT hybrids in the presence of TMB and H2O2. First, Co3O4 NPs anchored on CNNTs or CNNTs supply an electron to H2O2, and generates OH radicals from H2O2. Next, TMB is oxidized and generate an electron and generated electron offset the lack of electron of Co3O4 NP-CNNT hybrids.
These facile synthetic routes to fabrication of sized controlled Co NPs or Co3O4 NPs on CNNT could be further extended to control and distribute uniformly the size for various nanoparticles on CNNTs, which could also be used for a wide range of applications in the areas of energy and environmental technology, biotechnology, and medicine.
