Engineering soft matter has been studied intensively for diverse applications because of its excellent chemical, mechanical, optical, and biological properties. From molecular scale polymer brush to macroscopic gels, soft matter has their own structure, and its structural flexibility makes them valuable. In this thesis, I deal with responsive self-organization of soft matter - colloidal crystals and responsive hydrogels, especially - by external stimulations and discuss for its potential applications.
In Chapter 2, I report colloidal photonic crystals whose bandgap can be dynamically tuned by applying an electric field, where the bandgap changes occur at low actuation voltages with fast response times. To achieve this, I synthesized highly charged polystyrene (PS) particles of all equal size that formed spontaneously crystalline colloidal arrays (CCAs) in aqueous medium due to strong electrostatic repulsion among the PS particles. Under alternating current (AC) electric fields, the CCAs exhibited a dynamic modulation of the reflection color over the visible range, synchronized with the imposed AC field. The shift in the bandgap can be attributed to compression or relaxation of the colloidal lattice along the direction of the electric field. Therefore, the magnitude of the bandgap shift was controlled by varying the intensity of the AC field. For higher electric field intensities, the magnitude was also enhanced owing to the stronger electrokinetic force exerted on the charged PS particles. The actuation voltage and response time of the bandgap modulation were 2.2 V and 50 ms, respectively, which are considerably smaller than previously reported values for colloidal crystals due to high colloidal mobility in low viscosity medium. Furthermore, bandgap of CCAs was fixed at desired position when I used direct current (DC) electric field. Bandgap was shifted within seconds after field application, and then find equilibrium position after few seconds. Finally, I demonstrated the local tunability of the reflection color by using patterned transparent electrodes. The present prototype system is easy to fabricate and can be readily adapted. The system should prove useful in various mobile electronic devices, with potential applications such as reflective mode displays, optical switches, and tunable mirrors.
In Chapter 3, I report a facile method for creating bilayer microparticles which exhibit structural transformation to microcapsules by anisotropic volume expansion with remarkably sustained reversibility. Planar hydrogel microparticles, consisting of active layer and passive layer, can readily transform to 3D microcapsule by 2D bending of the bilayer when active layer swells at specific environment. The soft hydrogel materials facilitate the tight contact around entire surface, providing a complete closure of the compartment. Therefore, hydrogel bilayer structures enable in-situ encapsulation of micro- to nanoscopic active ingredients by a reversible transformation to microcapsules with a closed compartment. In addition, triggered release of the encapsulants can be simply achieved by inducing unfolding of the hydrogel bilayer. Moreover, motion of the microcapsules can be controlled by external magnetic field when iron oxide nanoparticles are dispersed in passive layer of the microparticles. I expect this work will open a highly promising new venue of micro-origami for drug delivery, cell encapsulation, tissue engineering scaffolds, and soft robotics, owing to the high reversibility of its actuation, the biocompatibility of the materials used, and the simplicity of fabrication.
In Chapter 4, I report a spatially controlled release of microcapsules by introducing water-soluble polymer nanoparticles to bilayer hydrogel microparticles. Aqueous gelatin solution containing fluorescence dyes are prepared for emulsification. Subsequently, aqueous media are evaporated in order to fabricate gelatin nanoparticles. Then, gelatin nanoparticles are introduced to self-folding bilayer hydrogel microparticles for spatially controlled release of fluorescence dyes. As gelatin nanoparticles slowly dissolve in water after transformation of 2D microparticles to 3D microcapsules, fluorescence dyes are release to interior of microcapsules. I expect this spatially controlled microcapsules enable with precisely controlled release of active ingredient to captured targets with small sample volume. Therefore, It can be used for investigation of various chemical-, and biological behaviors of targets such as cells.
