Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is achieved by premixed homogeneous charge before start of combustion and then combustion occurs as the result of spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points throughout the volume of the charge. The combustion of lean charge in HCCI engine results in low combustion temperature so that the NOx emission is reduced dramatically. PM emission can also be low due to the well premixed charge.
In present study, the application of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was employed and partially premixed charge compression ignition combustion (PCCI) and premixed compression ignition (PCI) was realized to overcome these problems. The investigation of the effect of the exhaust gas recirculation with respect to the injection timing and engine rpm on the combustion and emission characteristics in partially PCCI and HCCI engines was performed firstly. And then the effect of injector configuration such as the number of hole and hole diameter on the combustion and emission is investigated. The boosting was used to expand the operation range.
A single-cylinder diesel engine was used to operate in partially PCCI and HCCI combustion mode. Its bore and stroke are 100 and 125 mm respectively. Fuel injection pressure, injected fuel quantity and injection timing were controlled in a common-rail fuel system operated by a programmable injector with a pressure controller.
The HCCI combustion with a cool flame started to release heat from the injection timing of 60° crank angle (CA) before top dead center (BTDC) with regard to the injection timing. Therefore the injection timing of 40° CA BTDC was selected to represent the partially PCCI combustion.
The heat release was retarded when the EGR was applied, thus the combustion phase control was enabled. As the EGR rate was increased indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) was increased and combustion stability, which is presented as coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP, was improved.
Smoke was reduced because of the increased charge homogeneity resulting from the longer ignition delay due to the lack of the oxygen when a huge amount of EGR (EGR rate is more than 50%) was applied. NOx was also reduced because of the low combustion temperature induced by a heat absorption ability or larger heat capacity of dioxide than nitrogen. However, the HC and CO was increased dramatically due to the wall impingement or incomplete combustion and low temperature environment.
The trend of increase in IMEP with EGR rate was checked even though the engine rpm was increased. The trend of CO and HC and the decrease in NOx and smoke was verified.
Advanced injection of fuel into the cylinder to make the premixed homogeneous charge is required, however at that time the density inside the cylinder is relatively low so that the fuel spray can impinge the cylinder wall. The attached fuel in this cylinder wall can be the main cause of the HC and CO. Minimizing of the penetration of fuel spray have been tried by using the injector configuration such as narrow injection angle to reduce the HC and CO.
The result using the injector with 70° injection angle and 8 holes showed that the IMEP was achieved at about 520 kPa, which corresponds 87% of IMEP operated in conventional diesel engine combustion. However the exhaust emissions like CO and HC were more improved by using the 14 holes injector than 8 holes owing to better mixing through enhanced atomization and air utilization.
Intake pressure was boosted at 0.15 MPa to expand the operation range. When the oxygen concentration at intake was reduced at 10%, the IMEP of 650 kPa could be achieved by using the injector with 70° injection angle and 8 holes. The hazardous emissions such as NOx, HC and CO are also reduced. On the other hand, the smoke level is somewhat deteriorated.
Three combustion regimes according to the injection timing were verified by a heat release rate analysis: conventional diesel combustion, partially PCCI combustion and HCCI combustion. The partially premixed charge compression ignition combustion was characterized by short burn duration, and it was achieved when EGR was applied at a rate of around 40%.
When partially PCCI combustion was implemented with an injection timing of 40° CA BTDC and an EGR rate of around 40%, the IMEP for the injector with an injection angle of 70° and 8 nozzle holes was highest, because a larger portion of the injected fuel could participate in combustion. On the other hand, HC, CO and smoke emissions for the injector with an injection angle of 70° and 14 nozzle holes showed the lowest levels as a result of the better utilization due to the reduced nozzle diameter.
In-cylinder visualization showed pool fire of fuel films on the base of the piston bowl for both injectors with a narrow injection angle (70°). At EGR rate of 0%, more vigorous pool fire for the injector with an injection angle of 70° and 8 holes was observed and could be attributed to a larger amount of fuel film due to the longer spray tip penetration length. Near-stoichiometric conditions in diffusion combustion of a pool fire can cause highest NOx emission for this injector. At EGR rate of about 40% with lower oxygen concentration, unburned fuel film due to deteriorated pool fire activity could increase the HC and CO emissions. A portion of the fuel film caused a diffusion flame forming the smoke, which cannot be oxidized due to the lack of oxygen and decreased combustion temperature.
From the thermogravimetric and elemental analysis for conventional and low temperature diesel combustion, soluble organic fraction for low temperature diesel combustion was decreased sharply rather than that for conventional diesel combustion. Soot, which refers to the particulate matter without soluble organic fraction, was oxidized through the thermogravimetric analysis. However, the soot oxidation rate for low temperature diesel combustion is faster than that for conventional diesel combustion. The elemental analysis shows the portions of the components such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen sulfur, nitrogen for each combustion mode. The transmission electron microscope images showed the young soot for low temperature diesel combustion due to the lower ratio and nebulous structure.
