The Magnetic refrigeration is a kind of refrigeration technique utilizing magnetocaloric effect that is a phe-nomenon that the entropy or temperature change of solid materials by external magnetic field variation. The magnetic refrigeration has a great potential for the replacement of the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration cycles due to its high efficiency and eco-friendly characteristics. However, the magnetic refrigerator is difficult to operate in wide temperature span since the magnetocaloric effect is sufficiently large enough to apply for the magnetic refrigeration only in the vicinity of the transition temperature such as Curie temperature.
In this study, the layered AMR (active magnetic regenerator) that employs multi-magnetic refrigerant is in-vestigated to apply the magnetic refrigerator whose operating temperature span is between 77 K and 20 K. The numerical model of the active magnetic regenerator is established and it is thoroughly verified with the experimental results from the room temperature active magnetic regenerator using Gd (gadolinium). The op-erating conditions such as the mass flow rate and the pressure fluctuation of the heat transfer medium, inlet and outlet temperatures of the AMR, and the magnetic field distribution of the Halbach array are measured during the experiment and they are utilized as boundary conditions of the governing equations. The tempera-tures measured in the AMR are compared with the simulation results. Since the numerical simulation shows fairly good agreement with the experimental result, it is concluded that the numerical simulation can utilized for the design of the layered AMR. The four magnetic refrigerants, GdNi2, Dy0.85Er0.15Al2, Dy0.5Er0.5Al2, and Gd0.1Dy0.9Ni2 are selected as the magnetic refrigerants for the AMR operating between 77 K and 20 K. Two-stage AMR that each stage using two different materials are designed considering the magnetocaloric effect of the selected magnetic refrigerants. The optimum layering volume fraction and the mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid in each stage and the intermediated temperature between two AMR stages are also determined by the numerical simulation. The two stage AMR system is fabricated based on the design result. The magnetization and the demagnetization processes are performed by the low temperature superconducting magnet generating magnetic field swing upto 4 T with the alternating current. The heat transfer fluid, gaseous helium, is supplied from the helium compressor after being precooled in the liquid nitrogen bath. The no-load temperature is 24 K and the temperature span is 56 K. The effect of the layering volume fraction and the mass flow rate variation is also investigated. It is believed that the developed design methodology based on the verified numerical simulation and the experimental results can provide useful information on the development of the AMR system in diverse temperature ranges.
