Reading pattern of travel guide book changes occasionally according to the user’s objective or behavior, and reveals the most complicated reading among the books that need active reading. However, existing e-books provide the same navigation method regardless of the content type and evoke disorientation by using hypertext. Hence, this paper proposes a navigation design for travel guide books that enables non-linear read-ing and minimizes disorientation. Surveys and observation experiments were conducted to analyze navigation factors of existing travel guide books and to investigate features and limits of existing paper travel guide books and e-books. As a result, it was found out that travelers use guide books differently before and during travel, and want the organization of contents to change according to the user. It was also found out that frequent visits to certain pages such as maps, bookmarks for scrap purpose, and page movement due to switching between non-linear reading and searching makes the user uncomfortable. According to these results, Level-Based E-book Navigation(LBEN) is proposed. LBEN has the ordinary book as the original level from which link and bookmark levels are generated according to search and bookmark purpose. With level structure of LBEN, page navigation is convenient and relationship between pages is easy to recognize. Information, as opposed to page, is scrapped into bookmark level and can be reorganized. Comparison tests with paper travel guide books and e-books were conducted to evaluate usability of LBEN. Results showed increase in efficiency, mental model development degree, and satisfaction. Also, higher preference over existing media shows practical possibilities of new travel guide e-book navigation.
여행가이드북은 사용자의 목적과 행동에 따라 읽는 방식이 수시로 바뀌며 읽히는 책으로, 적극적 읽기를 필요로 하는 종류의 책 중에서도 가장 복잡한 사용성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 기존 전자책은 종류에 상관없이 동일한 내비게이션 방식을 제공하였으며 심지어 하이퍼텍스트의 사용으로 방향상실감을 야기하였다. 이에 본 논문은 비선형적인 독서가 가능하며 방향상실감을 최소화 할 수 있는 여행가이드북을 위한 내비게이션 디자인을 목표로 하였다. 그 방법으로 기존 여행가이드북의 내비게이션 요소 분석을 하고 기존 종이책과 전자책 여행가이드북의 사용 특징과 한계점을 알아보기 위해 설문과 관찰 실험을 하였다. 그 결과 여행자는 여행 전과 여행 중 여행가이드북의 이용이 다르며 내용 구성이 자신에게 맞춰 변화하기를 원한다는 것을 발견하였다. 그리고 특정 페이지로의 잦은 이동, 스크랩 목적의 북마크 그리고 선형적인 읽기와 검색 사이의 전환에 따른 페이지 이동을 불편해 한다는 것도 알 수 있었다. 이러한 이유로 일반 책인 오리지널 레벨을 기준으로 탐색과 북마크 목적에 따라 링크 레벨과 북마크 레벨로 구분되어 레벨이 생성되는 레벨 기반 내비게이션을 제안하였다. 레벨 기반 내비게이션은 레벨이 구분되어 페이지 간 이동이 용이하며 페이지의 관계를 쉽게 알 수 있고, 북마크는 정보단위로 스크랩이 되며 정보의 재구성이 가능하도록 하였다. 그리고 레벨 기반 내비게이션의 사용성 평가를 위해 종이책과 기존 전자책의 비교 실험을 하였고 이를 통해 효율성, 심성모형 형성 정도 그리고 만족감이 향상 되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 실제 사용을 함에 있어서 다른 기존 매체보다 선호도가 높아 새로운 전자책 여행가이드북 내비게이션의 실질적인 가능성을 볼 수 있었다.
