This thesis investigates value and momentum effects in the U.S. market after the recent financial crisis as well as for other periods. Many researchers contend that market anomalies exist in the two popular forms, value and momentum effects, and have studied where abnormal profits arise. Not many researchers continued their studies on the two effects in the U.S stock market after 2008. Not only do this article extend the past research period, but it also examine how value and momentum strategies performed before, during and after the 2008 financial crisis. The article applied three models??liquidity risks, different betas in up and down markets, and market states with lagged market returns??to explain the sources of cross-sectional variation of value and momentum. Liquidity risks and different betas for the up and down markets can offer a partial explanation for weak interaction of value and momentum after the financial crisis. The market states model that Cooper, Gutierrez, Hameed (2004) used can explain the downturn of momentum since the financial crisis. I argue that one common factor or model is unable to explain the cross-sectional relation between value and momentum strategies during and after the recent financial crisis.
