This paper examines firm-level R&D investment behavior facing firm-specific market and technological uncertainty and the moderating role of ownership structure and accumulated technological capacity between uncertainty and R&D investment. Using a sample of Korean manufacturing firms, I found several interesting results. Firstly, increased firm-specific technological uncertainty has a negative effect on firm R&D investment and firms are more sensitive to technological uncertainty than market uncertainty in terms of R&D investment. Secondly, when firms are governed by a powerful owner, which is called owner-managed structure, they tend to decrease R&D investment. However, when they face increased technological uncertainty it mitigates the negative effect of technological uncertainty on R&D investment. Finally, firms with high level of technological capacity tend to increase R&D investment and the behavior varies depending on the characteristics of uncertainty. When firms face increased market uncertainty, they tend to decrease R&D investment but if they face increased technological uncertainty they tend to increase R&D investment.
본 논문은 시장 및 기술 불확실성에 직면했을 때의 기업의 연구개발 투자 행태를 연구하고 기업의 소유 구조와 축적한 기술 역량이 불확실성과 연구개발 투자 사이에 끼치는 조절 효과에 관해 분석했다. 대한민국 제조업에 속한 기업을 표본으로 연구하였고 굉장히 흥미로운 몇 가지 결과를 발견했다. 첫째, 기업이 직면한 기술 불확실성의 증가는 연구개발 투자에 부정적인 영향을 끼치고 기업들은 연구개발 투자에서 시장 불확실성보다 기술 불확실성에 더 민감하게 반응한다. 둘째, 기업이 강력한 오너에 의해서 운영되는 오너 경영체제일 경우, 기업은 연구개발 투자를 줄이는 경향을 보인다. 하지만 기술 불확실성이 높아진 상황에 직면할 경우 오너 경영체제는 기술 불확실성이 연구개발 투자에 끼치는 부정적인 영향을 완화시킨다. 마지막으로, 높은 기술 역량을 보유한 기업은 연구개발 투자를 많이 하는 경향을 보였는데 이와 같은 투자 행태는 어떤 특성을 가진 불확실성에 직면하느냐에 따라 달라진다는 것이다. 본 연구는 불확실성을 시장 불확실성과 기술 불확실성으로 구분하여 각각의 불확실성이 연구개발 투자에 끼치는 영향을 동시에 연구했고 불확실성의 정도를 산업 단위가 아닌 기업 단위에서 측정했다는 점, 그리고 기업의 소유 구조와 기술 역량이 불확실성과 연구개발 투자의 관계에 끼치는 조절 효과를 분석했다는 점이 기존 연구와의 차별점이자 의의라고 할 수 있다.
