This research shows the effect of purchase type on selective information processing in a post-purchase context. Specifically, we find that individuals who make material purchases exhibit lower commitment to their decisions and also lower relative reliance of positive (vs. negative) information than those who make experiential purchases. Consequently, such differences lead to lower satisfaction in individuals who make material purchases compared to their counterparts. Additionally, we find a moderating effect of positive feedback from external sources. In particular, when they are provided with positive feedback, only those who make material purchases exhibit a significant increase in commitment to their decisions and relative reliance of positive (vs. negative) information. As a result, their satisfaction level also increases when there is a positive feedback (vs. no feedback).
