Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), a kind of solid-state lighting source, have been used as automobile brake lights, traffic signals and back light for liquid crystal displays as well as mobile phone, flashlights and all manner of architectural spotlights due to their advantages such as small sized device, low energy consumption (about 1/10), long operating time (about 10 times) and fast response rate (about 1000 times) compared to conventional lighting sources. Moreover, LEDs have an environmental benefit because LEDs do not emit harmful radiation such as ultraviolet and use mercury gas. To apply for lighting devices, white light have to be generated by LEDs. There are generally three methods to create white light using LEDs, i.e. the combination of three different LEDs, the white LEDs fabricated by blue LEDs pumped - yellow emitting phosphors and near ultraviolet LEDs combined with multi phosphors. To overcome the weak point of commercial white LEDs based on blue LEDs pumped - yellow emitting phosphors, low CRI, the white LEDs based on n-UV LEDs combined with multi phosphors have come into the spotlight.
In this thesis, the design, synthesis and luminescent analysis of efficient phosphors for n-UV LEDs to apply the white LEDs were introduced. Actually, the phosphors used in this white LEDs show the low luminous efficiency. From this problem as the motivation of my research, new and novel phosphors for n-UV LED applications were introduced.
Firstly, the blue emitting phosphor, Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu2+, for n-UV LED application was introduced. Sr2MgSi2O7 among silicate materials having high brightness and excellent stability was selected as a host lattice and Eu2+ was also incorporated in this material to show blue emission. The reaction temperature and activator concentration as most important factors for efficient phosphors were systematically varied to find optimum synthesis condition. Under the optimum synthesis condition, the phosphors synthesized by solid-state reaction method showed strong absorption band in UV region and high emission intensity. The emission intensity increased with increasing reaction temperature below optimum reaction temperature. However, the emission intensity slightly decreased with increasing reaction temperature above optimum reaction temperature due to the agglomeration between particles. Moreover, the emission intensity increased with increasing activator concentration below optimum concentration and then decreased above optimum concentration due to concentration quenching. When Sr ions were substituted by Ca ions placed at same column, the emission wavelength slightly moved to longer wavelength. This phenomenon was confirmed by crystal field effect and rietveld refinement results. Therefore, the emission wavelength of phosphors can be tuned by this concept. Ce3+ as a sensitizer was incorporated in this phosphor to enhance luminescent properties. The probability of energy transfer from sensitizer to activator could be expected via spectral overlap between PL spectrum of Ce3+ and PLE spectrum of Eu2+. Actually, the phenomenon can occur because the rate of Ce3+ emission is slower than that of energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ in the dipole-dipole interaction.
At next part, the luminescent properties of Ca6-xMgx(PO4)4:Eu2+ (CMP:Eu2+) and the energy transfer in the CMP:Eu2+,Mn2+ were discussed. Based on the phase diagram, the luminescent properties of CMP:Eu2+ phosphor was introduced with increasing Mg concentration. The large amount of Eu2+ can substitute Ca sites and concentration quenching occurred at the short critical distance with increasing Mg concentration. It indicated the interaction between Eu2+ ions decreased with increasing Mg concentration and this situation was confirmed by experimental results. Besides, the emission wavelength moved to the shorter wavelength and thermal stability decreased with increasing Mg concentration because both Eu2+ and Mg tended to substitute Ca sites in the CMP. When Mg concentration increased, Mg substituted low coordinated Ca sites due to its ionic size, so that Eu2+ avoidably substituted high coordinated Ca sites. This situation was confirmed by Pauling’s rule and Arrhenius equation. To synthesize two color emitting phosphor, Mn2+ as another activator was incorporated in this system. Mn2+ showed weak red emission due to its forbidden transition by selection rule. This emission could be enhanced by the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ and the single-phase two color emitting phosphor could be synthesized. In the CMP:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor, the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ was shown and confirmed by experimental results, and the emission color could be tuned by the various activator concentration. To generate white color by using CMP:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor, CMP:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor was combined with green phosphor (CMS:Eu2+). Mixed phosphors showed broad emission band in the wide region of emission wavelength and high color rendering index. The CMP:Eu2+,Mn2+ and CMS:Eu2+-based white LED exhibited excellent color rendering index of 98, the color coordinates of (0.3288, 0.3401), a color temperature of 6066 K, and bright natural white light under forward bias current of 20 mA due to the three emission bands located at ~460, ~535, and ~620 nm. It indicates that this white LED can be available promising white light source with high color rendering.
Solid-state lighting source의 하나인 Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)는 1962년 GaAsP compound semiconductor가 상품화된 이래로 눈부시게 발전해왔다.
