We have performed an initial search on lithium transition metal oxide with first principles computation. In the electronic structure, chemical bonding is changed by Li deintercalation. Li is found to be nearly ionized in LiMO2 and strong covalent bonding between M and O is noted. For the cation that competes for the same anion (oxygen) valence as Li deintercalation, the more amount of orbital mixing (covalent the bonding character) is, the higher is the redox couple M3+/M4+energy, thus the lower is the voltage. If the larger is the difference of covalency between cation and nearest neighbor anion when Li intercalated/deintercalated, the lower is the calculated voltage. In XANES analysis, the origins of peaks appearing in the experimental spectra are interpreted in terms of orbital interactions using overlap population diagrams. Both the M - O and M - M interactions are responsible for these M K-edge peaks. As a result of these analyses, some peaks in the spectra at different edges are pointed out to have characteristic origins.
The inductive effect is found to explain the changes in the Ni2+/Ni4+ redox voltage shift in LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 and Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3M1/3)O2 (M = Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co and Mo) layered compounds. With the counter cation that competes for the same anion orbital, the amount of orbital mixing of Ni-O bonding can be modulated. The formal charge of Ni, Mn and M (Ti and Mo) are estimated +2, +3 and +4, respectively, from the electronic structures and interatomic distances. In the cases of the Al, Cr and Fe substitution, these compounds have trivalent M and tetravalent Mn ions. The solid-state redox reactions of Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3M1/3)O2 are calculated under the assumption of a Li insertion scheme, and the reactions are shown to be Ni2+/Ni3+/Ni4+ and M3+/M4+ for the Al, Cr and Fe substitution. While in Ti and Mo substitution, Ti and Ni ions do not participate for the redox reactions in an entire range, respectively. Substitutive cation-oxygen bonding is more covalent, than the redox energy of Ni is lowered and resulting in the increase potential. As described above, the voltage profiles are very different because the kinds of metals are different to participate in electrochemical reaction according to the substitutive metal. Motivated by these first principles calculations on Li(Ni0.5Mn0.5)O2, Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3M1/3)O2 cathode materials were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. Excessive Al and Fe substitution leads to evolution of non-layered impurity phase, which can be clearly seen by powder XRD experiment. We predicted and confirmed that Ti and Al substitution would lead to a higher potential compared to other substitution in Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3M1/3)O2 compound. These compounds synthesized at 1000℃ show low capacity with poor capacity retention except Co substitution due to the incongruities of a calcination temperature and doping contents.
