Dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) proposed by Gr??tzel has been spotlighted due to its unique way of generating electrons directly from sunlight and low cost energy conversion efficiency (~11%). In this device, the issue is how to maximize the energy conversion efficiency. In these aspects, regeneration of oxidized dye by redox couple (I-/I3-) in electrolyte and interface of dye/TiO2 have been considered as key parts of DSSCs.
By providing comprehensive understandings on microscale events, computer simulations have been utilized to depict the extensive picture of complicated phenomena. Indeed, the computational modeling has been served to design proper materials based on the predicted properties guiding experiments in a good number of cases.
Here, we investigate the structural and dynamical physics and chemistry occurring during the light harvesting process of DSSC using first-principle based multiscale simulations. Chapter 1 reviews the operation mechanism of DSSC. In Chapter 2, we investigate the role of the water in ionic liquid (IL) for the electrolyte of DSSC using first principle based molecular dynamic simulation. In Chapter 3, we examine the dynamics of dye molecule on TiO2 surface combined with first principle quantum mechanical simulations and reactive force field (reaxFF) simulations.
