The existing theories suggest that the expensive equity linked warrants (ELWs) should be less attractive compared to the cheaper counterparts with equivalent or superior characteristics. However, we find a significant amount of empirical cases where the expensive ELWs are traded more heavily even after controlling various factors related to the price in the Korean ELW market. In this study, we propose a framework advocating that such cases could occur due to the characteristics of the Korean ELW market structure that give enough incentives to some investors to choose the expensive ELWs. We provide empirical evidence from the Korean ELW market that supports our framework.
