Recently, the radical technology advancements have yielded the competitive environment of business to be more intensive, especially in consumer electronics. The high-tech products have been physically converged into a common product form. Although convergence itself became important not only in high-tech industry as a way of technology and product innovation, but also a whole society, the extant researches generally have focused on whole convergence phenomenon or on service/network convergence. The research on product convergence still remains rather scant. In addition, the extant literatures focus only on the consumer side.
Thus, this research examines the effects of a firm’s original capability and manufacturing experience of added product. A utility function is employed in the study and the results indicates that the firm whose original capability is placed on manufacturing the main product rather than the added product has more competitive advantages, and that the firm who has a manufacturing experience of added product rather than does not has more competitive advantages in the convergence product market.
