Electrokinetic (EK) remediation is a promising remediation technology for soil contaminated with either organic or inorganic pollutants, or both. When low level of DC current is applied into target soil using electrodes, contaminants are forced to transport toward anode or cathode due to several mechanisms including electromigration, electrophoresis, electroosmosis, and electrolysis, etc. As an in-situ technology, EK remedi-ation is available for sites difficult to be excavated (for example, residence, historic sites, railway etc.) and it is cost-effective, reducing cost from excavation. Also, EK remediation process can overcome the limited remediation efficiencies for soil with low hydraulic permeability.
In order to enhance the mobilization of contaminants, various chemicals, such as organ-ic/inorganic acids, surfactants, co-solvents, chelating agents, have been introduced in EK remediation system. Especially for soil contaminated with heavy metals, chelating agents has known to increase the removal efficiencies of contaminants in EK, forming chelates-metal complexes with higher solubility in soil. However, it is important to consider if any adverse effects on environment may be occurred when they are applied into soil directly in in-situ remediation process. Several synthetic organic chelating agents including EDTA have been recently concerned about their biological toxicity.
In this study, the feasibility of natural chelating agents (NCAs) such as humic acid and fulvic acid in EK remediation system were investigated to enhance removal of heavy metals in soil. NCAs are mostly originated from microbial degradation of organic residues. They have various functional groups such as carboxylic acids and phenolic groups, which are attractive for heavy metals to form complexes. NCAs have potential to increase the mobility of heavy metals, which have 4 possible mechanisms: (1) competitive adsorption on soil surface; (2) changeable redox potential of heavy metals in soil; (3) complexation with iron and aluminum ions bonded with heavy metals; (4) formation of soluble complex with heavy metals.
In batch-typed adsorption tests, the effect of humic acid and fulvic acids on the mobilization of arsenic, copper, and lead in soil were studied. Two different soil including artificially spiked kaolin and field contaminated soil were tested. Within 1 hours of reaction, desorption of heavy metals with NCAs was leached at equilibrium state. For spiked kaolin, humic acid over 5 g/L of concentration showed increased the mobility of lead and arsenic and their removal was remarkably dependent on solution pH. Arsenic showed higher removal in acid and basic condition, while Cu and Pb were removed better in acidic condition. Solubilized Fe and Al from kaolin also affect the mobilization of arsenic and lead.
Electrokinetic remediation enhanced with NCAs was investigated with two different modes: NCAs added in electrolytes and mixed with soil as pretreatment. When solution containing humic acid or fulvic acid was supplied into EK remediation process, electrical current was enhanced followed by slightly higher removal of Arsenic. Especially soil part near anode, higher electrical current promote electrolysis which formed much hydrogen ions and increase solubility of arsenic and copper. However, lead was hardly removed during EK process.
Arsenic-spiked soil and field soil contaminated with As, Cu and Pb, simultaneously, were pretreated with humic acid to be applied In EK remediation system. The initial concentration of humic acid in soil affected on the mobilization of heavy metals, which seemed that adsorption of humic acid on soil particle in certain concentration might inhibit the desorption and mobilization of heavy metals. For EK process for As-spiked soil, removal of As increased with the concentration of humic acid. For EK process for field soil, increased concentration of humic acid in soil inhibited the electrolysis near anode and over 20 g/kg soil of humic acid showed inhibition of arsenic transport.
In risk assessment, fractionation of heavy metals was compared before and after EK process for above experiments. During EK process, mobile fraction (exchangeable and bonded to carbonate) were increased, which indicated that the potential to be transported and removed with following remediation process was increased. It was also evaluated with the Danger Index (DI), where DI including higher fraction (strongly bonded form) were decreased according EK remediation with NCAs.
In conclusion, as an alternative bioavailable chelating agents, NCAs have potential to increase the removal efficiency of heavy metals form soil in electrokinetic remediation system. They showed increased mobile portion of heavy metals, which could be removed much effectively with further remediation process.
