We present a novel tactile information transceiver that recognizes direction and selection of fingertip touch input and expresses artificial texture pattern/Braille output using 4x3 actuating pin array through a tunable friction force slider-pad. Conventional tactile devices were focused on either input function, or output function using the bulky structures requiring high driving voltage. The present device not only offers the capacitive detection of fingertip touch input, but also generates electrostatic frictional force and vibration using slider-pad, integrated with the piezoelectric pattern/Braille generator.
In the experimental study, we fabricated the slider layer and the electrode layer using an identical process including metal electrode patterning and silicon DRIE for spring structure formation. Under the slider and electrode layers, we assembled 12 piezo-bimorph actuators with stimulating pins. In the performance characterization, we verified the tactile input recognition performance by measuring the capacitance changes for the selection input of z-axis movement and direction input of xy-axis movement, which were 0.146±0.02nF/40μm and 0.09±0.02nF/750μm, respectively. We also verified the artificial texture generation performance by measuring the xy-axis friction force and lateral vibration generated by the electrostatic force between slider-pad and electrode layer. The friction force was measured in the range of 32~152mN at the voltage of 10~60V input, offering the lateral force on skin in the range of 121~580mN combined with spring force. We applied AC voltage to induce fluctuating frictional force thus generating lateral vibration on the skin. The peak-to-peak fluctuation of friction force was measured as 128.1±0.8mN under 3Hz/60V which is a 32% improved value compared to previous approaches. In the z-axis pattern/Braille output characterization, we conducted pattern recognition test for untrained normal volunteers. The maximum efficiency of pattern recognition was 97.2% and 93.7% for linear and planar patterns, respectively. For randomly chosen Braille characters, the device resulted in the maximum recognition rate of 32.1%. Finally we characterized mutual interaction between the lateral vibration (slider layer) and the vertical patterned stimulus (actuator array), where Braille character recognition rate was increased by 31.3% when it is working in combination of lateral vibration generation.
In this work, we proposed the novel tactile information transceiver, capable of direction/selection input recognition and simultaneous expression of texture/pattern output. The proposed device can be applied electronic products, such as the mobile devices having tactile interface.
