The purpose of this study is to develop an e-Learning system to teach English at the elementary school level that improves students’ interest in studying a foreign language and their intrinsic motivation to do so. We will also verify the educational effectiveness of the system.
To accomplish this goal, we performed three steps. First, considering self-determination theory (SDT), which is widely applied in traditional face-to-face classrooms in the area of foreign language learning, and considering that the study subjects are elementary school students, we developed strategies to improve student motivation based on capturing their interest. Second, taking these motivational strategies as the foundation, we created an e-Learning system (www.englishbuddy.kr) with the intention of increasing student interest and intrinsic motivation. Third, we verified the effectiveness of the system by surveying 2,300 users at 115 Korean academies over the course of one year. As a result of this study, two conclusions were reached. First, the e-Learning system based on motivation theory enhanced the students’ levels of interest and met the psychological needs of the learners. Second, the e-Learning system based on motivation theory enhanced students’ intrinsic motivation to study English. We deduced from these findings that the traditional motivation theory applied in face-to-face classes was effective in the e-Learning environment, as well. We believe that this study will contribute to establishing diverse educational models that consider student interest and SDT in e-Learning.
본 연구의 목적은 외국어 학습에 있어 흥미와 내적 동기를 높이는 초등 영어 이러닝 시스템(www.englishbuddy.kr)을 개발하고, 그 효과를 검증해 보는 데 있다.
이를 위해 다음의 3가지를 행하였다. 첫째, 외국어 학습과 관련된 전통적인 대면 수업에서 가장 폭넓게 적용되어 온 ‘Self-determination theory’와 초등학생을 대상으로 하고 있다는 점을 고려하여 ‘흥미’에 기반해 동기를 높이는 전략을 도출해 냈다. 둘째, 도출된 동기 전략을 기반으로 흥미와 내적 동기를 높이는 것을 의도한 e-Learning system(www.english buddy.kr)을 구축하였다. 셋째, 전국 115개 학원에서 1년간 2300명의 사용자를 대상으로 설문지 조사를 통해 SDT의 실험을 포함하여 시스템의 효과 검증을 행하였다. 연구 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 도출했다. 첫째, 동기 이론에 기반한 e-Learning system은 학습자의 흥미와 심리적 욕구를 향상시켰다. 둘째, 동기 이론에 기반한 e-Learning system은 영어 학습에의 내적 동기를 향상시켰다. 이를 통해 우리는 그 동안 대면 수업에 적용되던 전통적인 동기 이론이 e-Learning 환경에서도 유효하다는 점을 알게 되었다. 본 연구는 앞으로의 e-Learning에서 Interest와 SDT를 이용한 다양한 교육 모델을 정립하는 데 기여할 것이라 생각한다.
